This video shows how to replace the wireless card on an Inspiron 16 Plus 7640. Before you begin, ensure that you always use ESD protection when working inside the computer. Disconnect all the attached peripherals and enter service mode. To enter Service Mode, press and hold the B key on the keyboard, and then press the power button. Now, the computer will boot up and the Owner Tag information is displayed on screen. Press any key to proceed. The computer will emit three short beeps and shut down.
Now to begin, loosen the two captive screws and then remove the six screws that secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Using a plastic scribe, pry the base cover from the top left at the hinge, and then continue to work on the sides to open the base cover. Slide and lift the base cover off the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Remove the screw that secures the wireless-card bracket in place. And, lift the bracket off the wireless card. Disconnect the antenna cables from the card. Slide the card out of the slot. And, lift the wireless card assembly off the system board.
Now, let’s install the wireless card. Connect the white antenna cable to the main connector marked with a white triangle. Connect the black antenna cable to the auxiliary connector marked with a black triangle. Locate the notch on the wireless card. Align the notch with the tab on the slot and slide it in. Then, replace the screw that secures the bracket and card in place.
Now, let's install the base cover. Place and snap the base cover on the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Tighten the two captive screws and then replace the six screws that secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. With the computer assembled, connect the power adapter. Press the power button and power on the computer to exit from Service Mode. Please note, the computer will only turn on if the power adapter is connected.
