Fan and Thermals

Troubleshoot fan or thermal issues on a Dell desktop, all-in-one, or laptop

The fans in a computer helps circulate air to maintain an optimal temperature of the internal components. Your Dell computer can overheat if there is insufficient air flow due to dust or debris blocking the air vents, exhaust ports, or a clogged fan causing performance issues. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, the suggested quick steps might help.

  • Fans inside the computer become louder as they start spinning faster to remove excess heat.
  • The computer may intermittently shut down or restart.
  • System performance reduces unexpectedly.
  • The computer may stop responding, or performance reduces while playing games.
  • Startup error message such as ‘Alert! Air Temperature Sensor Not Detected’ or other fan, heat sink, or air temperature-related error messages.

Here are a few quick steps that you can try to resolve a fan issue

Try each step and check if the fan issue is resolved. If the issue is not resolved, proceed to the next step.

  1. Go to Dell.com/support/drivers, download and install the latest BIOS and latest drivers for your Dell computer.
  2. Inspect and clean the air vents and fans. Blocked air vents can cause the computer to overheat and can impact the performance of the computer.
  3. Optimize your Dell computer using SupportAssist.
  4. Download and install the latest operating system updates.
  5. Use Dell Power Manager to manage thermal performance (applicable for select Dell laptops).
  6. Run the SupportAssist diagnostics quick test on the computer. If the test fails, contact Dell Technical Support.

If these quick steps did not resolve the fan issue, we have more detailed information in the additional resources. You can also search for content related to the issue using the search bar at the top of this page.
