If your Dell laptop’s backlit keyboard isn’t working, try these troubleshooting steps. If your computer has a backlit keyboard, there will be an illuminated icon on the “F5,” “F6,” “F7,” “F10,” or right arrow key. If none of these keys have an icon, then your computer does not have a backlit keyboard.
First, let’s update BIOS. Go to Dell.com/Support and identify your system by typing the service tag in the search bar.
Select “Drivers & Downloads” and then click “Find drivers” to view the full list of drivers and downloads for your system. Select your operating system and set the category as “BIOS.” Scroll down and click “Download” next to the BIOS update file. Open the file when it finishes downloading and follow the instructions to update BIOS. Restart your computer, and at the Dell logo screen, repeatedly tap the “F2” key to enter BIOS.
The following steps will differ based on your system. For systems manufactured after 2021, click on “Keyboard.” In the “Keyboard illumination” section, you’ll see three options: “Disabled,” “Dim,” and “Bright.” Choose either “Dim” or “Bright.” Click “Apply Changes” and then “Exit” to restart the computer.
For systems manufactured before 2021, expand the section “System Configuration.” Select “Keyboard Illumination” and select either “Dim” or “Bright.” Click on “Apply” and then “Exit” to restart the computer.
