Cause

The results of the PDM create recommendation where the vCenter server hierarchy is retrieved (data centers, clusters, hosts, datastores, and networks). This is stored in a JSON-formatted output saved in a file with a name that can be found in the previously mentioned MCS log (mcserver.log.*). This JSON file can be located under /usr/local/avamar/var/vcs/dm/recommendations/.

One of the virtualized components on the vCenter server (a network in that case) had an invalid UTF-8 character causing the proxy deployment failure.

Resolution

A network name with an invalid UTF-8 character in the request caused this issue. Either give the Avamar account on the vCenter a no access-role on that network level or rename it removing the invalid non-UTF-8.
