NVP-vProxy: Windows VM FLR failing when Windows "Storage Spaces" is used on the VM

Summary: NetWorker VMware Protection (NVP) Virtual Machin (VM) FLR of a Microsoft Windows VM FLR failing when Windows "Storage Spaces" is configured.

Symptoms

During vProxy FLR for a Windows VM, the mount completes, but the file system does not display, preventing file selection. The VM operating system is configured with Windows Storage Spaces.

NOTE: Windows Storage Spaces is conceptually similar to software RAID. It is used to present multiple large VMware Virtual Machine Disks (VMDK) as one volume.

Cause

This is a known limitation in NetWorker as the Windows Storage Spaces file system is not supported for file level restore.

When performing the FLR, the vProxy mounts the VMDK disks to the target VM. The file system on the VMDK disks is not individual volumes, but are logical volumes (LVM) created with Windows Storage Spaces. The vProxy FLR solution does not interact with Windows Storage Spaces to create a new logical volume.

Resolution

Workaround:

Perform Instant Access Recovery of the VM and copy the required files. This procedure is detailed in: NVP vProxy: Perform VM FLR without vProxy FLR Agent
