Dell VxRail: VMware Tools Is Out of Date On This Virtual Machine

VMware Tools must be downloaded and manually updated.

• Download the VMware Tools package (use the version dropdown to confirm the latest version):
  • https://customerconnect.vmware.com/downloads/details?downloadGroup=VMTOOLS10326&productId=1072&rPId=109363
• Extract the linux.iso file from the .zip package
• Upload the linux.iso file to /tmp on the VM by SCP or SFTP
• Connect to the virtual machine Console.
• Verify that a mount point exists or create one:

  • mkdir /mnt/iso

• Mount the ISO:

  • mount /tmp/linux.iso /mnt/iso

• Copy the installer file to the /tmp directory:

  • cp /mnt/iso/VMwareToos-*.tar.gz /tmp

• Extract the installer files:

  • cd /tmp 
    tar -zxvf VMwareTools-*.tar.gz

• Run the installation:

  • cd vmware-tools-distrib
    ./vmware-install.pl

• Complete the installation prompts.
• Unmount the ISO after the installation is complete:

• umount /mnt/iso

Notes:

• If an error is seen, that the installation cannot continue due to RPM or DEB package installation, find the vmware-tools directory and change the name. Alternatively, move it to a different location, then try the installation again.
• In order to compile VMware Tools successfully, the "gcc Compiler" and Linux Kernel sources provided by your Linux distribution are required. Consult your Linux distribution documentation for details on methods to install these packages.
• It is normal for the console screen to go blank for a short time during the installation when the display size changes.
• [Optional] To delete VMware Tools installation packages, run:

  • cd
    rm /tmp/VMwareTools-*.tar.gz
    rm -rf /tmp/vmware-tools-distrib
