Summary: NVP - vProxy backups fail with DFC enabled.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

  • VMware Virtual Machines (VM) are protected through the NetWorker VMware Protection (NVP) vProxy appliance.
  • Backups fail with error:
Failed to open DDBoost connection to DataDomain host "DFC-DDXXXXXX": [5008] invalid argument

Cause

Direct Fiber Channel (DFC) is enabled on the backup device used by the vProxy backup; however, the vProxy appliance is not configured for VM Direct DFC backups.

Resolution

Option 1:

Configure the vProxy appliance to support VM Direct DFC backup and recovery operation. See the NetWorker VMware Integration Guide regarding VM Direct DFC requirements, limitations, and configuration requirements.

Option 2:

Remove the Fiber Channel settings from the NetWorker device used for VM backups:

1. Log in to the NetWorker Management Console (NMC) and go to Devices->Devices.
NOTE: For the NetWorker Web User Interface (NWUI) go to "Devices and Media"->"Devices."
2. Open the device properties of the device used by the VM's NetWorker Protection Policy.
3. Ensure that the "Auto Media Management" box is cleared to prevent the device from automatically remounting in the next step.
4. Unmount the device.
5. Open the device properties again, clear "Enable Fiber Channel" and delete the "Fiber Channel Hostname." Save the changes.
6. Mount the device. Re-enable "Auto Media Management" if previously enabled.
