PowerScale: Finding which drive belongs to which diskpool

Summary: A diskpool is a collection of disks distributed among a subset of cluster nodes. It is part of the cluster's storage infrastructure and helps manage how data is stored across multiple disks. The concept behind diskpools is to optimize performance, reliability, and storage efficiency. ...

Instructions

To find which drive belongs to a diskpool, use the disi -I diskpools ls command to list diskpools and their members. Check the "Members" column to identify the diskpool ID and corresponding bay numbers.

Symptoms:

Two drives are in Smartfail state.

  • Drive - Bay C1
  • Drive - Bay C2

Cause:

The Smartfailed drives belong to Bay C1 and Bay C2, which are part of diskpool 3 and 4.

  • The drives are listed as SMARTFAIL in the output of the command `isi storage pool list`.
  • The drives are assigned to diskpool 3 and 4 based on the output of the disi -I diskpools ls command.
Example disi -I diskpools ls output:

Name                      Id  Type Prot Flags     Members              VHS   HDD Used / Size       SSD Used / Size
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
h40_60tb_3.2tb-ssd_128gb  1   G    +2d: SDH---I-- 2-4                  1      196T /  201T (97%  )     0 /     0 (n/a  )

h40_60tb_3.2tb-           2   D    +2d: S-----IG- 1-4:bay3,6,9,12,15   -       66T /   69T (95%  )     0 /     0 (n/a  )
ssd_128gb:2                        1n
h40_60tb_3.2tb-           3   D    +2d: S-----IG- 1-4:bay4,7,10,13,16  -       65T /   66T (99%  )     0 /     0 (n/a  )
ssd_128gb:3                        1n
h40_60tb_3.2tb-           4   D    +2d: S-----IG- 1-4:bay5,8,11,14,17  -       65T /   66T (98%  )     0 /     0 (n/a  )
ssd_128gb:4                        1n

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unprovisioned drives: none
Draining drives: none
Type: D = Disk pool, G = Group, P = Policy, T = Tier, E = Empty Group or Tier
Flags: S = System, H = VHS Hide Spare, D = VHS Deny Writes,
       T = Spillover Target, M = Manual Group, E = Evacuate Pool,
       I = Force 8k inodes, R = Data Reduce, G = Gna Disabled

From the output above, diskpool 3 and 4 are listed as follows:

h40_60tb_3.2tb- 3 D +2d: S-----IG- 1-4:bay4,7,10,13,16 - 65T / 66T (99% ) 0 / 0 (n/a ) ssd_128gb:3 1n
h40_60tb_3.2tb- 4 D +2d: S-----IG- 1-4:bay5,8,11,14,17 - 65T / 66T (98% ) 0 / 0 (n/a ) ssd_128gb:4 1n

Resolution:

To find which drive on a bay belongs to a diskpool, follow these steps:

  1. Run the `disi -I diskpools command to list all diskpools.
  2. Look for the diskpool that contains the bay number of the drive you want to check.
  3. For example, to check drive Bay C1, look for the diskpool that contains bay numbers 4, 7, 10, 13, and 16.
  4. Check the disk pool ID and name and note the bay numbers associated with it.
disi -I diskpools ls

In the output, the Smart failed drives belong to Bay 10 and Bay 11, which are part of diskpools 3 and 4.

h40_60tb_3.2tb- 3 D +2d: S-----IG- 1-4:bay4,7,10,13,16 - 65T / 66T (99% ) 0 / 0 (n/a ) ssd_128gb:3 1n
h40_60tb_3.2tb- 4 D +2d: S-----IG- 1-4:bay5,8,11,14,17 - 65T / 66T (98% ) 0 / 0 (n/a ) ssd_128gb:4 1n

Therefore, the drives in Bay C1 and Bay C2 belong to diskpools 3 and 4.
