Symptoms
When migrating from VNX to a new Unity NAS and the data from the NDMP backups taken from the VNX need to be recovered after the VNX NAS has been decommissioned
NDMP cross platform recovery is possible between VNX vdm and Unity NAS server using the NetWorker nsrndmp_recover CLI command.
NDMP cross platform recovery is possible between VNX vdm and Unity NAS server using the NetWorker nsrndmp_recover CLI command.
Cause
To recover a mount point from an NDMP backup taken from a VNX data mover to a directory on a Unity vdm use the following command run on the NetWorker server:
nsrndmp_recover -s {NW_server_host} -c {source_clientname} -S {ssid} -v off -m {target_client_name}::{target_path}
where:
NW_server_host is the hostname of the NetWorker server
source_clientname is the hostname of the VNX data mover
ssid is the short saveset identifier of the NDMP backup
target_clientname is the hostname of the Unit vdm
target_path is the path to the directory where the data is to be restored
e.g.
To recover a mount point /mnt from an NDMP backup taken from host host venus to a directory /newmnt on NDMP host jupiter, use:
nsrndmp_recover s mars -c venus -S ssid -v off m jupiter::/newmnt
nsrndmp_recover -s {NW_server_host} -c {source_clientname} -S {ssid} -v off -m {target_client_name}::{target_path}

Resolution
Steps:
a) Locate the document called Dell EMC Unity Configuring NDMP Backups for https://support.dell.com
b) Configure the NDMP tape devices attached to the Unity NAS following the downloaded document
c) From Networker side: In NetWorker Management Console (NMC) :
Discover NDMP storage node using Unity NAS server name
From the example given above, the Storage Node name is jupiter, Storage Node Type is NDMP and the NDMP user name and password must be added to the respective fields in Remote Host.
Once the storage node is created, scan the devices attached to the new Unity NAS box (required for the recovery).
These should be the same as they were in the previous setup before VNX was decommissioned.
Add the new devices to the existing Tape Library.
Add the newly created devices in the Pool and exclude the old vdm device of the VNX.
Add the new NDMP storage node to the source client as recover storage node and run the recover command as follows:
nsrndmp_recover -s backup_servername -c source_VNX _vdm _name -S ssid -v off -m Target NDMP_Unity_clientname::[Target path] [Source path]
