DSU, SUU: Invcol.exe crash with legacy Intel NICs on Windows Server 2016
Summary: DSU and SUU may not inventory any server components due to a crash caused in the invcol.exe module. Inventory Collector 24.09 and newer is no longer fully compatible with Windows Server 2016. ...
Symptoms
Dell System Update (DSU) and Server Update Utility (SUU) applications may log a crash with invcol.exe only on Windows Server 2016.
This often occurs when Intel network devices Network Interface Cards (NIC) are present such as the Intel X520 and I350 series of PCI cards which include embedded NICs on certain 13th and 14th-generation servers.
As a result of the crash no components within the entire host are inventoried for update.
Cause
The crash occurs with new Intel network NIC inventory libraries now bundled in Inventory Collector 24.09 that are no longer fully compatible with Windows Server 2016 or older.
Resolution
Engineering has implemented a partial fix with the Inventory Collector (IC) module version 24.12 to avoid that crash that prevents no inventory or updating of any host components. Verify that the host is connected to the Internet and can reach https://downloads.dell.com, then run DSU to download the newer IC 24.12 module.
However, DSU still cannot detect the older Intel NICs and cannot update any outdated firmware versions. Intel X520 and I350 series NICs must be checked and updated using out-of-band updates performed with iDRAC.
