Avamar: Troubleshooting HFSCHECK failures due to MSG_ERR_INPROGRESS
Summary: This article outlines how to resolve the issue of a hfscheck failure of MSG_ERR_INPROGRESS.
Symptoms
A checkpoint validation (hfscheck) can fail with several symptoms. This article relates to an hfscheck failing with the error MSG_ERR_INPROGRESS.
This event can be logged as a Dial Home event, a UI event or seen while connected to an ssh session on the Avamar Utility Node.
Examples:
UI Event:
<4004> hfscheck of cp.xxxxxxxxxxxxxx failed on error: MSG_ERR_INPROGRESS
Output from status.dpn:
Last hfscheck failed with result MSG_ERR_INPROGRESS Cause
This error is generated if a new hfscheck process is initiated while another hfscheck is already running.
Resolution
hfscheck is already running by performing one of the following actions:
- From the MC UI (Server, Checkpoint Management):

The output above shows that hfscheck IS in progress for cp.20250422012428. It is shown in green. There is a "Start Time" in the Checkpoint Validation section, but the "Finished time" shows "In Progress"
- The checkpoint cp.20250422011017 is validated, is shown in blue, and has both a "Start Time" and a "Finished Time"
- The checkpoint cp.20250422012347 is not validated, is shown in red, and states "Not Validated" in both the "Start Time" and "Finished Time"
- From the AUI (Server, Checkpoint management):

The output above shows that hfscheck IS in progress for cp.20250422011017. There is nothing in the validated column for cp.20250422011017, and there is a Validation Start Time, but not a Validation End time.
- The checkpoint cp.20250422010008 is validated (the validated column has a tick, and there is a Validation Start Time, and a Validation End time
- The checkpoint cp.20250421210642 is not validated, has a question mark in the validated column, and there is no Validation Start Time or Validation End time
- From the
status.dpncommand
