PURPOSE:

This article lists steps on how to manage usernames and passwords on the Data Domain.

If the incorrect account and password is used, the following may occur:
  • Unable to log in to the Data Domain
  • Unable to access shares
  • Limited access
  • Media sets reported as offline

APPLIES TO:
  • All Data Domain Models
  • All Software Releases

SOLUTION:

There are several different access modes:
  • Log in locally to manage the Data Domain.
  • Accessing a share using windows Common Internet File System (CIFS)
    • A local account can be used, or a domain account.
  • Accessing a Network File System (NFS) mount
    • A local account or Network Information Service (NIS) can be used.

Note: Prior to checking accounts on the systems, ensure that the things such as case sensitivity (check CAPS Lock) and spelling are correct.

Verify the local account:

If the Data Domain is in Workgroup mode, the username and password on the client machine must match a username and password on the Data Domain.
(In most environments with a backup application have a service is set up to run with a local account on the backup server.)

1. Determine which account is in use:

Identify which account is being used in the backup application.

Ensure that the same account exists on the Data Domain using the following command:

user show list

2. Once the account is confirmed, verify that the password does not contain the $ symbol.

Verify that the passwords on both the Data Domain and the backup server are correct.

If required, the password on the Data Domain can be changed using the following command:

user change password <user>

Verify the CIFS account:

If the Data Domain is in Active Directory or Domain mode, it must be able to communicate with a Domain controller.

1. Log in to the Data Domain with an admin account.

2. Check if the Data Domain is configured to use Domain or Active Directory authentication using the following command:

cifs show config

3. Verify that the Data Domain can see the Domain account on the Windows domain controller.

cifs troubleshooting user <username>

4. Verify that the password does not contain the $ symbol. Reset the domain user password if required.
