Summary: This article provides common cause to check for when disk drives are overheating.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

  • Alert message indicates high disk temperature:
Temperature of Encl 1 <serialno> Disk <x> is moderately high: threshold 45 C
  • # disk show reliability-data (from the console or in AutoSupport) indicates high disk temperatures (typically above 40 deg C)

Applies to:

  • All Data Domain Systems and Shelves
  • All Software Releases

Cause

Most common:

  • Poor ventilation

  • Inappropriate cabinet

  • Airflow obstruction

  • Fan failures

Resolution

Verify the installation environment. All Data Domain systems have front-to-rear cooling airflow, and need an unrestricted flow of room temperature air at the front of the system.
High room temperature, failed air-conditioning, or blocked airflow are common causes for overheating.
A common cause is installation in an enclosure (cabinet) without adequate ventilation in the front and rear doors.

Front and rear doors of a cabinet must have a 65% minimum open area to allow adequate airflow for cooling a Data Domain system. "Server Cabinets" typically specify the open area (that is, percent of door covered by perforations or cooling vents), with 65% being the typical spec by most server vendors.

Glass-door networking cabinets are not appropriate for installation of Data Domain systems.

Ensure that the system cabinet is not obstructed in any way.

Ensure that no other hardware failures exist on the system (for example fans)
