Symptoms

MCC Cache Loss is a condition which occurs when data is cached during a shutdown event and it's not properly restored on the next power sequence.

This condition results in both Storage Processors in Rescue Mode and data would be un-available.

To prevent this issue from occurring proper shutdown procedures should be followed when possible. In the event of multiple unexpected power outages you can follow the steps below to identify the issue and assist Remote Support in recovering from this condition.

Establish connection to the VNXe using SSH or IPMI tool.

Once connection is established run the following commands and record the output and provide to Support when opening a service request.

Cause

The VNXe is designed to handle unexpected power outages.  This particular issue occurs when the system is recovering for one power issue and before the Cache Image can be restored another power outage occurs.

Resolution

Dell EMC Technical Support must be engaged to recover from MCC Cache Loss.

Upgrade VNXe3200 systems to VNX Operating Environment (OE) 3.1.8.9340299 or later to address this issue. Dell EMC strongly recommends that customers with the affected code levels install the latest release available for download as soon as possible.

This software can be downloaded from the Downloads page for VNXe3200 on EMC Online Support. You can also contact Dell EMC Technical Support or your Authorized Service Representative and open a Service Request (SR) to obtain the appropriate software. Be sure to reference this Knowledgebase article number in your SR.

Please see the following ETA

ETA 501063: Multiple sequential system power losses may result in system cache loss and pools going offline, which may result in potential data unavailability or data loss.

For VNXe1600 systems please upgrade to code version 3.1.9.9570228 or above.
