VxRail: Upgrade Fails with Error "MetadataDownloadError Could Not Download from Depot"

Summary: A vSphere Installation Bundle (VIB) may fail to install from the datastore during the upgrade. Upload the VIB from the local upgrade package to the host and install it manually.

Symptoms

During VxRail Upgrade of ESXi, the below error is shown:

Failure occurred while running an upgrade for bundle: VXRAIL_COMPOSITE-4.7.411-26446498_for_4.7.x.zip. 
The error message: [MetadataDownloadError] Could not download from depot at zip:/vmfs/volumes/vSAN-Datastore-PROD/upgradeBundles/VMW-ESX-6.7.0-bnxt-214.0-1-offline_bundle-14230442.zip?index.xml, 
skipping (('zip:/vmfs/volumes/vSAN-Datastore-PROD/upgradeBundles/VMW-ESX-6.7.0-bnxt-214.0-1-offline_bundle-14230442.zip?index.xml', '', 'Error extracting index.xml from /vmfs/volumes/vSAN-Datastore-PROD/upgradeBundles/VMW-ESX-6.7.0-bnxt-214.0-1-offline_bundle-14230442.zip: File is not a zip file'))

Cause

The ESXi VIB could not be installed automatically from the datastore.

Resolution

Procedure:

  1. Copy the ESXi VIB that is shown in the error message from the VxRail upgrade package to the local desktop.
For example, in the above error: VMW-ESX-6.7.0-bnxt-214.0-1-offline_bundle-14230442.zip
  1. WinSCP to the ESXi that has the error and add the VIB to tmp directory.
  2. SSH to the ESXi and run the install VIB command: 
esxcli software vib install -d <full path to the zip file>
OR
esxcli software vib install -v <full path  to vib file>

You should receive the message below for successful installation:

Installation Result Message: The update completed successfully, but the system needs to be rebooted for the changes to be effective. 
Reboot Required: true VIBs 
Installed: BCM_bootbank_bnxtnet_214.0.230.0-1OEM.670.0.0.8169922, BCM_bootbank_bnxtroce_214.0.187.0-1OEM.670.0.0.8169922 VIBs 
Removed: BCM_bootbank_bnxtnet_20.8.152.0-1OEM.650.0.0.4598673, VMW_bootbank_bnxtroce_20.6.101.0-20vmw.670.1.28.10302608 VIBs 
Skipped:
  1. Check if a reboot is needed for the changes to be effective.
  2. Retry the upgrade.
