Does the SIM card stop working after imaging your Gateway 3000 with Ubuntu Core 16?

Your Dell Edge Gateway 3000 device with Ubuntu core 16 installed may see issue with the Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN). The DW5515 High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSPA) and DW5815 Long-Term Evolution (LTE) Mobile Broadband cards report a missing SIM card. Even when the SIM card is fitted. The same device with Windows 10 Long-Term Servicing Branch (LTSB) 2016 installed connects to 3G and does not see the same issue. Check out the following section for instructions on how to recover from this issue when using Ubuntu Core. (Tested with 3G carriers AT&T and Verizon.)

Symptoms:

  • The Gateway 3000 comes with Microsoft Windows 10 LTSB 2016 installed as default
  • You image the device with Ubuntu Core 16
  • The device is using either the DW5515 or DW5815 Mobile Broadband card
  • The SIM card is not detected at any point
  • The issue is not seen when the device is left with Windows 10 LTSB installed

Relevant Hardware and Software:

  • Gateway 3000 device
  • DW5515 Mobile Broadband Card
  • DW5815 Mobile Broadband Card
  • Microsoft Windows 10 LTSB 2016
  • Ubuntu Core 16

Recovery Steps using Ubuntu

The SIM is not identified as being present due to an incorrect setting in the Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) data. Follow the steps below to resolve this:

  • Wrong Setting dyn_cps.startup.sim_power_off=1

  • Correct Setting dyn_cps.startup.sim_power_off=0

The following steps call out when using Terminal commands:

  1. Check if the modem is present by checking the modem INDEX after running the following command:

    # sudo modem-manager.mmcli -L

  2. Check the modem's status by running the following command:

    • Replace the zero in the following Terminal commands with the INDEX number that is shown as a result of step 1

    • Confirm that the primary port is cdc-wdm0

    • Confirm all the ports are present. (For Example: Ports: 'cdc-wdm0 (mbim), wwan0 (net), ttyACM0 (at)')

    # sudo modem-manager.mmcli -m 0

  3. Check the SIM card status by running the following command:

    # sudo modem-manager.mmcli -i 0

  4. Download the fix_sim This hyperlink is taking you to a website outside of Dell Technologies. tool

  5. Stop the modem manager using this command:

    # sudo stop modem.manager

  6. Run the following command, using your AT command port after the -p switch. See two examples below:

    No SIM Attached

    # sudo ./fix_sim -p /dev/ttyACMIHL8548...
SIM set to 0 ... Success!
    at+cpin +CME ERROR:_10

    SIM Attached

    # sudo ./fix_sim -p /dev/ttyACMIHL8548...
SIM set to 0 ... Success!
    at+cpin +CPIN: READY OK

  7. Restart the modem manager using this command:

    # sudo start modem.manager
