Symptoms

This article provides information on how to update the time on your computer if the computer clock is wrong.

Table of Contents:

  1. Change Internet time server
  2. Manually set the time

Change Internet time server

By default, Windows 8 will attempt to synchronize the computer clock with Microsoft's time server, time.windows.com. A number of alternate Internet time servers exist that can potentially be more accurate.

To change your Internet time server, perform the following steps:

  1. Press the Windows + X keys to open the Power User Tasks Menu, OR swipe in from the right side of the screen to open the Charms menu and select Settings.

  • Select Control Panel, then select the Large Icons view. Select Date and Time.

  • Select the Internet Time tab, and note the information shown. Select the Change Settings... button.

  • If prompted by Windows to authorize modification, select Yes.

  • Confirm that the checkbox next to "Synchronize with an Internet time server" is selected.

  • Select an alternate time server from one of the options below, or use a time server of your own choosing:
    • pool.ntp.org - Network Time Foundation
    • time.nist.gov - National Institute of Standards and Technology time server
    • time1.google.com - Google Time Server. Available server prefixes are time1, time2, time3, and time4.

  • Select Update Now.

  • Verify that your computer time is correct.

    Manually set the time

If the computer clock is still not showing the correct time after changing the Internet time server, you may need to manually set your clock. To manually change the computer time and time zone, perform the following steps:

    1. Press the Windows + X keys to open the Power User Tasks Menu, OR swipe in from the right side of the screen to open the Charms menu and select Settings.

  • Select Control Panel, then select the Large Icons view. Select Date and Time.

  • Select Change date and time... If prompted by Windows to authorize modification, select Yes.

  • In the Date and Time Settings dialog box, do one or more of the following:
    • To change the hour, select the hour, and then use the up or down arrows to increase or decrease the value.
    • To change the minutes, select the minutes, and then use the up or down arrows to increase or decrease the value.
    • To change the seconds, select the seconds, and then use the up or down arrows to increase or decrease the value.

  • When you have finished changing the time settings, select OK.

  • To change the time zone, select Change time zone.

  • In the Time Zone Settings dialog box, select your current time zone in the drop-down list, then select OK.

If your time zone observes Daylight Savings Time and you want your computer clock to be adjusted automatically when daylight saving time changes, make sure the Automatically adjust clock for Daylight Saving Time check box is selected.

  • Click OK.
