Symptoms

When a node is replicating data and then loses the network connection, in same cases, the copy is not failed over to the peer node. Following the remote connection recovery the replication session remains in the system paused state until the next RPO cycle or until user explicitly performs pause/resume operation.

Cause

A software issue affecting the handling of replication IO failures is the cause of this issue. If connection is lost when the IO is pending on the remote side, then sometimes the failure status returned results in replication not attempting to retry the operation on the peer node. This results in a session that remains in the system paused state until the next RPO cycle.

Resolution

After network failure recovery, if a replication session is stuck in system paused state either of the following options will allow the replication session to recover :

  1. Pause replication session.
  2. Resume the paused replication session.
Or
  1. Wait until the next RPO cycle for the session to recover by itself.
