ECS: Wildcard DNS entries are needed for the data mobility (copy to cloud) feature

Summary: This knowledge article explains why wildcard DNS entries are needed for data mobility (copy to cloud)

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

When setting up data mobility (copy to cloud) and using DNS names the wildcard DNS entries are needed because the ECS is using host style requests to check the target bucket existence. The data mobility feature is available since ECS version 3.8.

The following error can be seen when setting it up:
Error 1013 (http: 400): Bad request body. cannot determine if Target bucket exists

Cause

The ECS checks the existence of the target bucket with host style requests. These fail if the wildcard DNS entry is missing.

Resolution

The user will need to work with their network team to add wildcard DNS entries to their DNS server(s).
