PowerProtect: VMware vSphere flags VM needs consolidation after successful backup

Symptoms

A PowerProtect Data Manager Virtual Machine backup is successful.
vSphere UI identifies that the Virtual Machine needs consolidation.
When VM consolidation is attempted, it is reported as successful, but the consolidation flag does not go away.
At the Policy level, Indexing and the setting for 'Exclude Swap' are both enabled.

Cause

This is a PowerProtect Data Manager software defect.

When a VM is consolidated from vSphere UI, the consolidation is reported as successful and the VM consolidation flag is not cleared. The vmware.log for the VM logs the following error: 
vmware.log:YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ss.994Z In(05) vcpu-0 - ConsolidateItemComplete: Online consolidation failed for disk node 'scsi0:0': Failed to lock the file (5).
vmware.log:YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ss.005Z In(05) vcpu-0 - ConsolidateEnd: Snapshot consolidate complete: Failed to lock the file (5).

 

Resolution

This issue is resolved in PowerProtect Data Manager 19.15. When PowerProtect Data Manager 19.15 is released, upgrade to this version for a solution. 

This issue could be encountered in PowerProtect Data Manager versions 19.13, 19.14 and even in older versions of PowerProtect Data Manager. A diagnostic binary to address this issue is available for PowerProtect Data Manager 19.14. Contact Dell Support to get this diagnostic patch for PowerProtect Data Manager 19.14.
