An increase in memory consumption by the SNMP process is a sign of a memory leak pile-up.

There have been occasional leaks during the handling of SNMPv3. Over time, these leaks can accumulate, potentially leading to memory exhaustion in the SNMPD process.

Cause

This issue has been identified due to the Cisco MDS NXOS Bug CSCvy03206
This issue only affects the MDS switches running with the 8.4(1a) version.
Leaks are seen in SNMP operations involving V3 security level.

Resolution

Workaround:
1. Preventing leaks in the process could be achieved by avoiding external SNMP operations.
2. Use SNMPv2 instead of SNMPv3 for snmp get/walk/bulkwalk from pollers.
3. To prevent memory exhaustion conditions caused by the SNMPD process, kill it from bash in a worst-case scenario.
The SNMPD process will be automatically respawned after the current instance of the process is killed. Dell Support engagement is needed for this option.

Resolution:

Upgrade to one of the following NXOS versions: 8.2(11), 8.4(2d), 8.4(9) or 9.2(1)
