Symptoms
An SSD reports an error, and the iDRAC shows low ambient system temperature prior to drive alerts. Errors may be present on multiple drives and potentially in several systems within the environment.
Cause
Dell drives require ambient temperatures to remain above 0C degrees during production operation. Drives that operate below the minimum temperature exceed design specifications and may report SMART predictive failure as overall device health has been impacted.
LifeCycle Controller logs show system inlet temps with a low temperature warning or critical event several hours or days before the drive report faults.

12/23/2022 12:55 TMP0118 Warning The system inlet temperature is less than the lower warning threshold. 12/23/2022 23:02 PDR16 Warning Predictive failure reported for Disk 22 in Backplane 1 of Storage Controller in SL 3. 12/24/2022 03:18 PDR16 Warning Predictive failure reported for Disk 23 in Backplane 1 of Storage Controller in SL 3.
Resolution
Dell solid state drives reporting faults due to operation outside design environmental specifications may need replacement and may not be covered by standard system warranty.
Once a drive reports a predictive failure, its reliability is diminished, and the SMART alert cannot be cleared.
Environmental operating specifications for PowerEdge systems are documented in the Technical Guide from Dell Support.
