Live Optics | Optical Prime | Cloud Pricing Based on Peak Usage (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform)

Summary: This is an overview of Cloud Pricing Based on Peak Usage for Optical Prime.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Instructions

Cloud pricing based on peak usage takes the peak usage of vCPUs and memory, the used storage capacity of on-premises VMs assessed by Optical Prime, and queries the price of hosting the assessed VMs on the three main cloud providers (AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform). Pricing options are provided for three tiers (On-Demand, 1 year, and 3 years).

Note: Cloud pricing based on peak usage is available for VMware environments only. Peak usage values are not available for non-VMware environments.

From April 2024, Cloud Pricing supports currency conversion. The tool retrieves pricing in USD from the selected region. It then applies a daily rate conversion to the requested currency for on screen display, Excel, and PAPI output.

Locate Cloud Pricing Based on Peak Usage Information

Cloud pricing is only available through Optical Prime so you must first run an Optical Prime collection. The Cloud Pricing Peak Usage has been added to the general Optical Prime Excel spreadsheet. It only displays if there are running VMware VMs in your environment.

To view cloud pricing based on peak usage information, download the Excel report from the Reports menu in Optical Prime. Cloud pricing based on peak usage is also available through PAPI.

Notes:

  • Cloud pricing based on peak usage is available only for running VMWare VMs with both peak vCPU and peak memory greater than zero.
  • If a VM is idle, not running on a VMWare environment, or has no peak usage for vCPU or memory, it is excluded from the Cloud Pricing Peak Usage
  • Cloud pricing based on peak usage is not yet available on the portal view or in AIR PowerPoint slides

Pricing Factors

The factors used to determine pricing are listed below:

Pricing is based on the following configuration parameters for each of the assessed nodes:

    • Number of CPUs
    • Memory
    • Operating System
    • Storage

Pricing is based on the following fixed assumptions from the cloud provider:

    • VMs are running 24/7 for the whole month
    • Currency: USD
    • Monthly aggregation of the price
  • Pricing is done for Guest VMs
  • Pricing is based on SSD storage option
  • Burstable instances are excluded from our pricing model
  • Pricing include the base license price for the OS
  • Pricing is for shared tenancy

Other Notes

AWS :

  • The pricing of convertible reserved instances is displayed for 1 year and 3 years
  • General purpose SSD storage (GP2) is used

Azure

  • Pricing is not shown for:
    • Low power instances (for example A0àA7)
    • Promo SKUs
  • Storage: SSD

Google Cloud Platform:

  • Storage: Zonal SSD Persistent disk

Smart Approximation Logic

Smart approximation is the logic utilized for the display of pricing in case no direct match was found where we will Proceed with the below :

  • Round up for VCPU
  • Round down for VMEM if difference is <=10% of the original value with a ceiling of 6 GB if the difference is greater, we proceed with a round up.

Results for smart approximation:

Price Matched Field

Notes

True

Matched against instance name = X

False

No direct match found. Used nearest largest configuration with instance name = X, vCPU = Y, vMEM = Z

False

Configuration not available
