Load BIOS Default Settings Disables Intel TXT on a Dell Computer
Summary: Learn what to do if Load BIOS Default Settings was selected in the BIOS of a Dell computer, causing Intel Trusted Execution Technology to be disabled.
Symptoms
Computers are delivered with Intel Trusted Execution Technology (Intel TXT) enabled as a security feature in the factory configuration. This setting remains unchanged during normal use.
When Load BIOS Default Settings is selected from the BIOS setup menu, the Intel Trusted Execution Technology setting becomes disabled. There is no option to re-enable it.
Affected Platforms:
- Dell 14S DS14260
- Dell 16S DS16260
- Dell Pro 7 13 P713260
- Dell Pro 7 14 P714260
Cause
The default BIOS configuration has this security feature disabled by design. During the factory setup process, the feature is enabled before the computer ships.
When Load BIOS Default Settings is selected, the computer returns to the original BIOS defaults. This disables the feature and overrides the factory configuration.
Resolution
Resolution:
If Load BIOS Default Settings has been selected, select Load Factory Default Settings from the BIOS Setup to re-enable Intel TXT.
Prevention:
Select Load Factory Default Settings instead of Load BIOS Default Settings in the BIOS setup menu. Load Factory Default Settings restores the original configuration applied during manufacturing and keeps the security feature enabled.
