OMIVV Firmware/Driver Basics:

  • Supports Catalog-based Updates or Single DUPs
  • Update wizard is launched in VCenter, not in OMIVV itself
  • Driver updates are for VSAN Solutions only(not covered under this module)

Repository Profile

  • Definitions used for Catalog-based updates
  • Configured under Compliance and Deployment > Profiles > Repository profile
  • By default designed to go to the online catalogs on downloads.dell.com
  • Can use offline DRM catalog on a share as well
  • Driver Repository Profiles are for the offline bundles on the VMware Hardware Compatibility list
NOTE: Driver Updates are for VSAN only, and a Driver Repository can only hold up to 10 drivers. If more than 10 are present, it will randomly select 10.

How to do OMIVV Firmware Updates.

  • In VCenter, browse to Host and Clusters
  • Select the device or cluster that you want to update
  • Click the Actions Drop-down, then at the bottom select OMIVV Actions > Firmware Update
  • Select the Repository Profile that you want to use

The Catalog is compared to the FW Inventory of the devices.

  • Select the Updates that you want to perform
  • Finish out the wizard

Troubleshooting OMIVV Firmware/Driver Workflow:

The firmware Update wizard shows no valid firmware update.

  • Check the OMIVV Host Inventory to ensure that it knows the current FW Revisions
  • Check the Repository Profile being used to ensure that it has valid and newer updates
NOTE: iDRACs only accept .exe format so DRM Offline shares with .BIN files will not work.

Firmware Update job fails - Unable to download the updates.

  • Check the details of the job or Logs for where it is failing
  • If it fails to connect to downloads.dell.com or download all updates, verify that the network can reach downloads.dell.com/catalog and download the catalog.xml.gz
NOTE: Since this all operates over port 443, it is proxy or network blocking at the URL level. In most scenarios there will be logs from the mechanism blocking it.

Advanced Option: If no logs are possible root the appliance and run a tcpdump

  • If the job shows that a specific update failed to download, check the path for the update
For online updates the path looks like this: downloads.dell.com/FOLDERXXXXX/1/update.exe
For offline updates, check the path: share/FOLDERXXXXX/1/update.exe

NOTE: Usually it is a catalog problem at this level, or the update has been respun but the customer's catalog has not been updated.

Firmware Update job fails - Unable to push update to the iDRAC.

  • Check the details of the job or Logs for where it is failing
  • If the update fails to be pushed to the iDRAC, check the iDRAC for the error message
  • If the error is unable to mount remote share or network error, verify that the NFS port is open

If unable to control access or access cannot be proven, create an NFS Share with the online catalog.xml to test the iDRAC's ability to mount the catalog.

  • If the update does copy successfully but fails to apply it, troubleshoot the iDRAC/LCC or Component with standard troubleshooting

    1. Attempt a different update that does not require a reboot, like iDRAC or Diagnostics.
    2. If a different update fails, racadm job queue deletes -I JID_CLEARALL_FORCE.
    3. If a different update succeeds, it is an issue with the DUP itself, the component, or LCC.
    4. Reflash the same FW for the component instead of an upgrade.
               5. If the reflash is successful, then it is a DUP version-specific problem.
    6. If reflash fails, racadm job queue deletes -I JID_CLEARALL_FORCE, drain flea, replace.
