PowerEdge: MX7000 Lead Chassis Becomes Inaccessible After OpenManage Enterprise - Modular Firmware Upgrade

Symptoms

After a firmware upgrade of OME-M, lead chassis becomes inaccessible over UI. Using Ping or SSH remains unresponsive.
  • iDRAC access to all blades in the lead and member chassis remains intact. Member chassis is accessible over IP, Ping, or SSH.
  • Virtual IP is created with a different subnet mask than the primary IP for the Management Module (MM).
  • Performing an MM reseat does no resolve the issue.
  • Serial connectivity to the MM remains accessible.
  • Enabling and disabling vLAN using racadm command over serial connection resolves the issue. However, an MM failover may bring back the issue for the new active MM.

Cause

Virtual IP (VIP) is in a different subnet which causes NetworkManager to exit detecting misconfiguration after firmware upgrade. NetworkManager fails to create the route resulting in the issue.

OME-M UI does not allow VIP to be created with a different subnet than the primary MM IP. However, the REST Application programming interface (API) does allow this configuration.

Resolution

Delete VIP and create a new one. If needed, reset to the defaults and then configure the IP address again.

Workaround:
Enable and Disable vLAN over Serial connection.
