Avamar: Administrator Console Shows Incorrect Time for the Mexico Time Zone

Sintomi

When launching the Avamar Administrator console (also known as the Java GUI), the displayed time is one hour ahead when the client machine is configured to use a Mexico time zone.

Examples include:

  • The Activity window displays incorrect timestamps.
  • Event Management displays events using Central Daylight Time (CDT) instead of Central Standard Time (CST).

The issue is only observed in the Avamar Administrator console. The Avamar server itself reports the correct time when checked using commands such as mccli activity show. The correct time is also displayed in the Avamar User Interface (AUI).

Causa

Avamar Administrator 19.12 for example uses an embedded Java Runtime Environment (JRE). The bundled JRE version is 8u202.

Mexico abolished Daylight Saving Time (DST) in 2023. Changes related to the DST removal were incorporated into tzdata 2022f. Java releases that include these time zone updates include:

  • JRE/JDK 8u351 and later
  • JRE/JDK 11.0.18 and later
  • JRE/JDK 17.0.6 and later
  • JRE/JDK 19.0.2 and later

Although JRE 8u351 contains the required time zone updates, testing showed that the issue may still persist when used with Avamar Administrator.

Additionally, installing JRE 8u481 or later may result in the issue described in article Avamar: Unable to Launch Avamar Administrator JNLP with Java 1.8.0_481.

Risoluzione

Use one of the following options:

Option 1 

Apply the workaround described in article Avamar: Unable to Launch Avamar Administrator JNLP with Java 1.8.0_481 and configure Avamar Administrator to use the latest supported JRE version.

For instructions on how to point Avamar Administrator to an alternate Java installation, see "Updating the Avamar Administrator Shortcut" below.

Option 2

If the workaround from the article Avamar: Unable to Launch Avamar Administrator JNLP with Java 1.8.0_481 cannot be implemented, install JRE 8u421 and configure Avamar Administrator to use it.

Testing has shown that JRE 8u421 correctly displays CST instead of CDT for Mexico time zones.

Updating the Avamar Administrator Shortcut

To configure Avamar Administrator to use a different JRE version:

  1. Right-click the Avamar Administrator shortcut on the desktop and select Properties (or press Alt + Enter).
  2. In the Shortcut tab, locate the Target field.
  3. Replace the existing JRE path with the desired Java installation path.

Example for Avamar Administrator 19.12 using JRE 1.8.0_421:

Original target:

C:\avs\administrator\19.12.0.186\bin\mcgui.bat C:\avs\ADMINI~1\19120~1.186\lib\jre

Updated target:

C:\avs\administrator\19.12.0.186\bin\mcgui.bat C:\PROGRA~1\Java\jre1.8.0_421
  1. Click Apply.
  2. Click OK.
  3. Launch Avamar Administrator and log in.
  4. Navigate to Help > About Avamar Administrator.
  5. Verify that the JRE version displayed matches the version specified in the shortcut.

Notes

  • PROGRA~1 = Program Files
  • PROGRA~2 = Program Files (x86)

Informazioni aggiuntive

The issue occurs because the embedded JRE shipped with Avamar Administrator contains outdated timezone information that does not reflect Mexico's DST changes. Using a newer JRE version with updated timezone definitions resolves the incorrect CST/CDT time display.
