MFE zDP: VDG ends with message EIP0206E MAX_SNAPSETS exceeded

Symptoms

No changes were made to the VDG definition or the devices belonging to it.   In this example, the VDG has a MAX_SNAPSETS of 48 with CYCLE_TIME(30,0,SECURE,1,1)

Following the microcode upgrade, start the VDG.

Cause

Starting with microcode 5978.479.479, the termination of expired snapsets is now handled by the microcode and not the MFE software.  Also, the number of snapsets per device includes all VDGs that a device may belong to.

The Snapshot count of 49 reflects the existing 48 for VDG MYVDG and 1 from another VDG that has only 1 snapset but has overlapping devices.  The software did not look beyond the VDG whose cycle was active for the max number. The microcode considers all VDGs leading to the EIP0206E condition and causes the VDG to end.

Resolution

Permanent Fix:
  • For Mainframe Enablers 8.4, PTF SF84106 has been developed to correct the issue. It is available to download from Dell Online Support.
  • For Mainframe Enablers 8.5, PTF SF85054 has been developed to correct the issue. It is available to download from Dell Online Support.
