Symptom

Data Domain system posts an Alert notification to indicate the Storage Processor (SP) has failed.

"Additional Information" within the Posted alert states the cause is a failed coin-cell battery.

NOTE: This article is for the failed coin-cell (aka CMOS or System) battery. Other failures for the same Event ID (ENVIRONMENT-00032) are addressed in article Data Domain: Alert: The storage processor has failed.

Affected Systems:
  • All Data Domain Systems
  • All DDOS versions
Symptoms:
  • Alert Notification:
Event Id: EVT-ENVIRONMENT-00032 Event Message: The storage processor has failed Object: Enclosure=1 Additional Information: Cause=Coin cell battery failed
  • BIOS log (within latest Auto-Support or Support Bundle)
Example: Coin-Cell entry shows <= 2.2 voltage (on legacy Data Domain systems)
Voltage CoinCell_Voltage | Lower Critical going low | Asserted | Reading 2.20
  • MESSAGES log (within latest Auto-Support or Support Bundle)
Multiple entries for SP failure, as below:
platmon: CRITICAL: The storage processor has failed. Enclosure=1 Cause="Coin cell battery failed"
  • On PowerEdge-based Systems (PowerProtect Data Domain), the failure is captured in iDRAC TSR Logs
The CMOS battery has failed

Unexpected system behavior may be encountered until the battery is replaced.

Orsak

If the battery voltage drops below the threshold, then the Alert (EVT-ENVIRONMENT-00032) is posted. The System Battery (a.k.a Coin cell, CMOS, or RTC) has a minimum voltage threshold to function as expected. Any reading below the given threshold is considered a battery failure, and it should be replaced immediately.

For legacy Data Domain systems, the voltage must be > 2.2 voltage.

For PowerProtect Data Domain systems, the voltage must be > 3v.

Upplösning

For ALL Legacy Data Domain systems:
  • Dell Technologies does not stock system batteries.
  • A replacement SP must be dispatched.
For Current PowerProtect Data Domain systems:
  • PowerProtect (DD3300, DD6900, DD9400, DD9900, or newer models)
  • A replacement system battery must be dispatched.
