Avamar NDMP backup performance is slow (RESOLUTION PATH) 

An Avamar NDMP backup takes a long time to run and may time out before the end of the backup window.

There are many factors that can cause NDMP backups to run slowly or take a long time to complete.

Below is a list of actions to take and a list of knowledge articles documenting known issues to be reviewed if encountering this type of behavior.


Step 1: Ensure that the NAS is healthy:
Backup performance is often impacted when a NAS experiences health issues. Ensure it is healthy before measuring backup performance.  
The NAS vendor's Support team should be engaged to resolve health issues.


Step 2: Gather a full set of required information from the customer:
It is critical to have a detailed understanding of the environment before starting to troubleshoot the situation. Collect the following:

• Avamar - Information to gather when investigating client slow backup performance issues

Step 3: Gather information about the NAS:
Gather information the following information about the NAS which the NDMP accelerator is backing up.

• The type of NAS.
• The version and release number of the operating system.

Step 4: Review known issues:

• Avamar: Slow Avamar NDMP backup performance and low CPU use by avtar due to TCP window scaling
• Avamar: NDMP backup has slow performance due to large number of changed files
• Avamar: NDMP slow Level 0 backups and general performance best practices
• Avamar: NDMP backup run as a level zero while there is a successful incremental available
