The primary drive of your computer varies with the storage configuration. The solid-state drive in M.2 slot one is the primary drive. Your Inspiron 5501 supports one of the following storage configurations:

One M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drive or one M.2 2280 Intel Optane storage
One M.2 2230 solid-state drive and one M.2 2280 solid-state drive
One M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drive and one M.2 2280 Intel Optane storage
