How to replace the System Board on a Dell 14 Plus DB14255

This 3D experience gives you the step by step process of replacing the System Board and a Dell14Plus DB14255. The procedure will also include removing the Base Cover, Battery Cable, Battery, SSD SSD 2230, WLAN, Heat Sink, USB Type-C Bracket and reinstalling them.

Removal

Base Cover

1. Identify the base cover highlighted in blue.
2. Loosen the screws that secure the base cover to the palm rest assembly.
3. Remove the screws that secure the base cover to the palm rest assembly.
4. Using a plastic scribe, pry the base cover from the hinge area and continue prying on all its sides to loosen the base cover.
5. Remove the base cover from the palm rest assembly.

Battery Cable

1. Identify the battery cable highlighted in blue.
2. Disconnect the battery cable from the system board.
3. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to ground the system and remove residual static electricity.

Battery

1. Identify the battery highlighted in blue.
2. Remove the screws that secure the battery to the system.
3. Lift the battery, along with the battery cable, from the system.
4. Peel the tape that secures the cable to the battery.
5. Unroute the battery cable from the routing guides on the battery.
6. Slide down the clamp to disconnect the battery cable and remove it from the battery.

Solid State Drive (SSD) 2230

1. Identify the solid state drive (SSD) highlighted in blue.
2. Remove the screw that secures the SSD assembly to the system board.
3. Slide and lift the SSD assembly from the system board.
4. Flip over the SSD assembly.
5. Remove the screw that secures the SSD to the mounting bracket.
6. Slide and remove the SSD from the mounting bracket.

Wireless Module (WLAN)

1. Identify the wireless module (WLAN) highlighted in blue.
2. Remove the screw that secures the bracket to the wireless module.
3. Lift the bracket from the wireless module.
4. Disconnect the antenna cables from the wireless module.
5. Slide and remove the wireless card from the system board.

Heat Sink

1. Identify the heat sink highlighted in blue.
2. Loosen the screws that secure the heat sink to the system board. Loosen in reverse order.
3. Remove the heat sink from the system board.
4. Use the alcohol pad to clean the system board and heatsink (as shown in the video).

USB Type-C Bracket

1. Identify the USB type-C bracket highlighted in blue.
2. Remove the screws that secure the left display hinge to the palm rest assembly.
3. Open the left display hinge to an angle of 90 degrees.
4. Remove the screws that secure the USB type-C bracket to the system board.
5. Lift the USB type-C bracket off the system board.

System Board

1. Identify the system board highlighted in blue.
2. Peel the tape that secures the display cable to the latch on the system board.
3. Lift the latch and disconnect the display cable from the system board.
4. Lift the latch and disconnect the I/O board and touchpad cables from the system board.
5. Disconnect the fan and speaker cables from the system board.
6. Remove the screws that secure the system board to the palm rest assembly.
7. Lift at an angle and slide out the system board from the palm rest assembly.

Install

System Board

1. Identify the system board location highlighted in blue.
2. Slide and place the system board on the palm rest assembly.
3. Install the screws that secure the system board to the palm rest assembly.
4. Connect the fan and speaker cables to the system board.
5. Connect the I/O board and the touchpad cables to the system board. Close the latch to secure.
6. Connect the display cable to the system board. Close the latch to secure.
7. Adhere the tape that secures the display cable to the latch on the system board.

USB Type-C Bracket

1. Identify the USB type-C bracket location highlighted in blue.
2. Align with the screw holes and place the USB type-C bracket on the system board.
3. Install the screws that secure the USB type-C bracket to the system board.
4. Close the left display hinge and align it with the screw holes.
5. Install the screws that secure the left display hinge to the palm rest assembly.

Heat Sink

1. Identify the heat sink location highlighted in blue.
2. Apply a pea sized amount of thermal material as shown.
3. Align and install the heat sink on the system board.
4. Tighten the screws that secure the heat sink. Tighten in order. Do not over tighten.

Wireless Module (WLAN)

1. Identify the wireless module (WLAN) location highlighted in blue.
2. Slide and insert the wireless card into the slot on the system board.
3. Connect the black cable to the auxiliary (black triangle).
4. Connect the white cable to the main (white triangle).
5. Install the bracket on the wireless module.
6. Install the screw that secures the bracket to the wireless module.

Solid State Drive (SSD) 2230

1. Identify the solid state drive (SSD) location highlighted in blue.
2. Slide and insert the SSD into the mounting bracket.
3. Install the screw that secures the SSD to the mounting bracket.
4. Flip over the SSD assembly.
5. Slide and insert the SSD assembly into the slot on the system board.
6. Install the screw that secures the SSD assembly to the system board.

Battery

1. Identify the battery location highlighted in blue.
2. Connect the battery cable on the battery.
3. Slide the clamp upwards to secure the battery cable to the battery.
4. Route the battery cable through the routing guides on the battery.
5. Adhere the tape that secures the cable to the battery.
6. Install the battery, along with the battery cable, into the system.
7. Install the screws to secure the battery to the system.

Battery Cable

1. Identify the battery cable location highlighted in blue.
2. Connect the battery cable to the system board.

Base Cover

1. Identify the base cover location highlighted in blue.
2. Align the base cover and press the edges of the cover until it clicks into place.
3. Tighten the screws that secure the base cover to the palm rest assembly.
4. Install the screws that secure the base cover to the palm rest assembly.
