Aurora R8, suddenly won't power on

Hi all,

Been using my Aurora R8 since December 2019 and have had no dramas with it until today.

This morning I powered it on as I usually do and used my PC for a few hours and turned it off for the day. All ran fine.

Went just now to power it on for some late night gaming and hitting the power button on the tower does nothing at all. Its like completely dead.

I pressed the little button at the back of the tower next to the power cord and I hear the fans power up and a green light comes on but soon as I let go of the button it shuts all down again.

Have tried removing the power cord from the wall socket and holding the power button down for 15-30 seconds and then reconnecting the power and trying but sadly no luck.

Really starting to freak out now at the moment as I dont know what has happened or what else I could do?

Has this ever happened to anyone before with the R8 or similar model?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Same problem. I downgrade to 1.0.9, everything was working fine. Then, i put again the windows 2021-10 update and it started to flash the BIOS to 1.0.17.

The problem is from the windows update!

I found a way to make it harder for windows to flash the bios.

WHILE BOOTING, ACCESS THE BOOTING MENU.

2) Go to Security TAb

3) Go down on the UEFI Capsule firmware updates

4) Put Disabled

5) Save and reset.

You should be fine now till Dell has a real fix, aka new update.

Dell did make the time to send me a PM about this post, but it was just letting me know that my warranty has expired.

Not a single peep about what's going on with the faulty software they've unleashed on us all though. One could only hope that they care enough about their customers to resolve the issue they've caused.

I just want to add that I only started to have issues with the system not powering up after I received updates around October 20th for the `Alienware Command Center Application` and ` Alienware OC Control Application`.  I'd flashed my Bios back around October 8th to version 1.0.17, and only started having this issue after the AWCC updates.

Just a little extra info if Dell cares to look into it.

At first I thought the rollback did not work then I checked and it seems like the BIOS flash did not take I had to attempt to flash it twice more for it to finally go into effect. For those whom claim that the flash did not work please verify your BIOS version you might need to flash it multiple times for it to take. The first time I did it it just rebooted a couple times but never brought me into the updating bios splash screen.

I flashed my Bios to 1.0.17 when the "Alienware Update Application" offered it.  Following this the "Alienware Command Center" indicated that there was an update to the "Alienware OC Controls Application".  I allowed it to be installed.  This broke the  CPU and Memory overclocking sections.  The values were showing 777.  Flashing the bios back to 1.0.9 fixed the OC problem and power button problem.

It certainly is possible the two have conflicted now somehow, however the only thing I've rolled back at the moment is the BIOS while everything else has stayed update and can confirm my R8 is still working perfectly now again.

Yeah when it does the first restart after rolling back the BIOS you have to be taken to that screen thats in the lowest resolution and it shows a orange progress bar (0-100%) etc and after that is completed the machine with turn off/on multiple times until it boots back into Windows.

If anyone is not seeing that part then yeah you haven't successfully rolled back your BIOS version.

A Dell supervisor has contacted me and asked for my Windows version/info so they can further look into the matter and pass on the info to the engineering team.

Honestly, It could be. When you start to think about it a little bit more. The Lighting/FX are all tied to the power button, and that's all controlled through the AWCC. Potentially worth a look as a cause.

As Haroldwong noted " you might need to flash it multiple times for it to take"

For me it took several times before I got the flash screen. System would shut down, but not restart. I think for me is was about 6 time before it finally restarted with flash screen.

I’m also wondering if it’s the OCC or some other program.  My problem started yesterday before I flashed the bios to 1.017.

I can't thank you all enough for this! I was literally moments away from ordering a replacement computer as I didn't want to wait for repair times as I thought somehow my motherboard had fried!

Well rolling back the BIOS does seem to have worked.

FYI I found Alienware_Aurora_R8_1.0.9.exe here

https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=ry9kn&oscode=wt64a&productco...

And

As Haroldwong noted " you might need to flash it multiple times for it to take"

For me it took several times before I got the flash screen. System would shut down, but not restart. I think for me is was about 6 times before it finally restarted with flash screen.
