Alienware Aurora R6 clicking noise

So I've looked it up for a bit but I can't find anything definitive on the matter. I'm pretty sure it's coming from the PSU but it doesn't look like anything is colliding with the fan. I'm not sure what it could be.

Here's a video of the problem. I'm kind of sure it's not a HDD problem but you never know. Anyone have an idea of what it is? It's brand new.

Sounds like he is just trying to verify some contact information and help you. Rodrigo works for Dell/Alienware Support and can dispatch parts and/or technicians to your location. The choice is yours, but I would suggest you provide the requested information if you want him to help you.

Ok, I just wasn't sure.

Same issue here, an intermittent rattling sound; or as someone more amply put it, the sound of a Geiger counter.

The sound, and frequency of, doesn't increase or decrease when stresses are applied (such as gaming). The greatest annoyance is its continuity: literally every minute the rattling/Geiger counter noise pops up. I estimate the sound occurs for 15 seconds out of every minute the R6 us on.

Am hoping it's a simple fix, such as securing a cable that's brushing against the spinning blades of a fan.

Alienware-Rodrigo: there is no option to send you a pm when I click on your name. Under the 'Action' menu I have three options: give you a badge, download vcard, follow your RSS.

Can you please advise how to send you a pm?

Thanks.

Hi, ‌! I have the same clicking noise issue. My Aurora is less than a week old.

There is no option to send you a pm when I click on your name. Under the 'Action' menu I have three options: give you a badge, download vcard, follow your RSS.

Can you please advise how to send you a pm?

Thanks!

Hi Speedstep. Thanks for the suggestion, I appreciate your help.

Unfortunately I still cannot send Alienware-Rodrigo a message, it does not give that option.

To clarify: I have clicked his name, it takes me to Alienware-Rodrigo page, then clicked on the 'Follow' button, gave a few minutes to refresh, refreshed my page, am still logged in, etc., and ... same issue, there is no option to send a PM under the action menu you've highlighted in your screenshot on Alienware-Rodrigo's page (apologies for the redundancies, want to ensure I've highlighted the steps I've taken).

I'll try again tomorrow; perhaps more time needs to lapse before the engine updates my following status and grants the ability to send a moderator a PM.

Or maybe it's a browser issue (i.e. this site runs better under a browser such as Edge vs Chrome)?

Regardless, appreciate your help my friend.

All the best.

Same here. Did the same things, still can't PM him and he's not responding to my mentions.

Yes I saw 'Delta' on the 9 o'clock position of the label as opposed to the Huntkey that was at the 6 o'clock position of it's label.

But I think I may have to apologize...being so sensitive to that clicking, what sounded like a return of the original clicking turns out it was actually the TV PVR box very close by, which always had a bit of a clicking sound as well to its hard drive.

Now I'm really glad I verified before that in fact it was coming from the Huntkey PSU originally by doing the 'in my hand plugged in test' as mentioned above.  Since unplugging the PVR now about 20 minutes I haven't heard anything yet. I will post in a day or so if the clicking does or does not return.

Sorry again!

1. I just had my Aurora R6 Huntkey PSU removed and replaced with a Delta PSU because of the same clicking sound reported here.

2. To verify it was coming from the Huntkey PSU, once out of the computer and in my hand I plugged in the Huntkey PSU and pressed the trouble-shooting button next to the green LED on the back of the PSU which caused the fan to go on and I was able to clearly hear the same clicking.

3. My new Delta PSU is now in my computer 5 minutes and guess what?...the same clicking sound is there...very interesting!

1. ok

2. Good idea.

3. Did you happen to take a picture of the Delta's label? Are you sure it was the Delta 850w model?

Thanks for the input fitness88.

Your solution doesn't work for me, but we're adding to the knowledge database on this issue; we're bound to help someone!

Like yourself, my Aurora R6 (it's still just a baby, only a few weeks old) is making a clicking sound.

After scouring Dr. Google, I found few solutions save forums like this.

Did run across suggestions that the clicking sound (the one from my r6 is loud, and occurs intermittently every 15 - 20 seconds out of every minute) may be caused by a wayward cable tag (or the edge of a cable itself) brushing against a spinning fan. I opened my unit up and did an initial sweep, securing every damn tag and cable I could find/feel in proximity to PSU fan, graphics card fan.

No dice.

Luck to us all.

Hi Telsa1856.

Appreciate your input! Read your earlier comments re: bum power unit being shipped with the r6.

Man I hope that's not the case; I paid a hefty premium for this unit (and in Canadian dollars, so am getting extra fleeced d/t exchange rate).

Will bring to attention of customer support (paid a hefty premium for that too).

Still hoping it's a simple fix, one that doesn't require replacing the PSU.

Hi Bittabola.

Seems you and I are not the only ones having this issue re: inability to pm to a mod.

Not impressed with Alienware's customer support so far (not you Alienware-Rodrigo, I imagine you're quite busy with other duties; am referring to the mechanism to contact a mod on these forums). Granted I am a new customer, here's hoping things improve!

Time for a more direct approach I suppose.

Good luck Bittabola. If you find a solution to this rattling issue with the Aurora R6, please let us know.

I'll do the same.

1. Good.

2. OK, so sounds like all failures are still Huntkeys. I wonder how long they will continue to ship those?

All Delta 850w are the fix and none of those have failed yet, AFAIK.

3. No problem. I think we are all a bit skittish after spending all this money on a system and then needing a part so soon. That is why I've put considerable time into this thread. Identifying the problem, explaining the problem and why fix works, and resolving it on all systems.

As always, we must all be vigilant about identifying which fans might be making the rattling noise, because there are several inside the machine. Who knows, if some of the other fans are cheap (sleeved bearing?) types, their bearings might "go out" also.

Edited.

Fitness88 had a bit of a false-positive there.

Once I identified the noise as coming from the Power Supply, I did visually check (from the PS vents on both sides but without opening it) for any possible obstructions and none were found. The cooling fan is the only moving part in Power Supply. If you Google more, you will read that a bad fan bearing often makes a rattling noise. Mine has been working 100% for almost a month now ... ever since I installed the Delta-850w PS.

The only way to get rid of the noise from a bad bearing in a Power Supply is to:

1. Replace the whole Power Supply (with better OEM Dell part)

2. Replace the Power Supply and wiring harnesses with appropriate after-market unit.

3. Void your warranty and replace the fan inside the Power Supply (advanced skills and good parts-picking luck required).

In my case, even though I could accomplish #2 & #3 (with more of my own time and money), since I have a warranty, I chose option #1.
