Inspiron 570 Ultimate "Uber" Upgrade Guide including Overclocking

After seen multiple users asking for help on this topic and loosing the touch with those users, I decided that it is time to put together all information and make it as nice as possible. When the project will be completed I will state here completed (it will take me some time to put it together). For now it is

WORK IN PROGRESS

Little warning first to users who still hold any type of warranty for their Inspirons. Upgrading HDD (Hard Drive), RAM (memory) and installing Video Card would not void your warranty, PSU (Power Supply Unit) could be questionable. Dell generally do not recommend changing CPU (processors) [as soon as you think about changing motherboard, your PC is no longer Dell, unless if it Dell motherboard from another model, but then it is Frankenstein, in this case you can look for help at Tom's harware forum, but not here], however I would present the list of Dell tested processors, and there would be another 2 processors not tested by Dell. Also, you can change the case to make your Inspiron look nicer, or to improve cooling, I would say - it would void warranty as well. Lastly, at the end, I would talk about overclocking, this would not just void any warranties, it would place you at my mercy, since I am the only one left here who done this and still willing to help others, just remember, as soon as you decide to go this path, you might endanger you PC - it could even catch fire and burn your place, so basically you are doing it on your own risk. I am considering, if you overclock Inspiron 570 you are agree with possibilities listed above and would not hold the grudge (or hold responsible) against me or any ohter members of this forum if you become homeless due to the fire caused by overclocking, LOL.

I will start from less invasive and easier parts to more difficult and dangerous.

The guide would consist of the following parts

Part 1. RAM upgrade.

Part 2. Video Card upgrade.

Part 3. PSU upgrade

Part 4. Processor (CPU) upgrade

Part 5. CPU cooling and general cooling in the original case.

Part 6. CPU cooling and general cooling in the larger case.

Part 7. Overclocking.

If I miss something I would come back and fix it, I would try to keep everything in one thread. When I would consider the Guide completed, I would say so.

First things first - information. All Inspiron 570 manuals, next Driver download page easy and Driver download page not so easy.

Prior asking questions, I would assume that you read corresponding manuals, so I don't have to explain you, for an example, how to open your case, well I hope you understand what I mean.

Part 1. RAM upgrade.

According to the official Dell manuals, Inspiron 570 is limited to 8 GB of maximum 1333 MHz memory, however it was found that 16 GB of 1333 MHZ is recognized, faster RAM would slowed down to 1333 MHz. So far no one complained that theirs RAM (manufacturers) were not recognized by Dell. Generally it is recommended to use Crucial, however I used Corsair and did not noticed any problems. Also, try to avoid tall heat spreaders, especially if planning to use tower push-pull fan configuration - push fan may block access to the nearest to CPU cooler RAM slots.

Let Me try to explain.

Unfortunately this is the only picture where you can see the situation.

This is the Diagram with the same color code RAM.

4.  DIMM 1 - most likely could be affected by large CPU Cooler

5. DIMM 2 - may be affected by large CPU Cooler

6. DIMM 3 - not going to be affected by large CPU Cooler

7. DIMM 4 - not going to be affected by large CPU Cooler

This info is from manual

Part 2. Video Card upgrade.

So you know, our Inspiron has only 300 watt PSU, so without changing PSU the strongest Video Card upgrade would be Sapphire (recommended) 7750, or cheaper and a bit less powerful version is 6670, for anything above this you would have to upgrade your PSU.

Some people asked if the Video Card and RAM slots would "intercept", the answer is no. However, in order to change or add RAM, Video Card has to be removed to allow RAM holder clips to open, this is approximate picture below, the maximum length of the card is about 12 inches or 30 cm, in this case Video Card would go under HDD so you would have to measure upper clearance .

Watch out for 2 SATA slots next to Video Card - they could be covered by Vcard heatsink, if this is happening you have to use sata angle cables.

I realized that I did not cover much of Video Cards here. So a little more. As you notice I placed MSI 550 TI OC Cyclone for its exceptional cooling ability, this card is very tall, but short, measurements are (L)"x(H)"x(W)", 8.27" x 5.51" x 1.38". I will add more cards here as users will report.

XFX Double D FX-787A-CDFC Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card 9.5" x 4.4" x 1.5".

Part 3. PSU upgrade.

This is general guide for PSU recommended by MSI, I would add at least 50 watt to your final decision, however the more the better, some say 100 watt is very good idea, would not argue here. Any standard PSU will fit inside (there could be small bending of some metallic parts of the case required, but nothing major). Just make sure that new PSU has 24 pin or 20+4 pin main MOBO (motherboard) power connector plus 4 pin ancillary power connector, 4 SATA power cables, and at least one 6 pin Video Card PSU connector. It could be modular or not. Modular are much more expensive, with regular you would have to improvise hiding keeping cables out of the way.

Here are a few pictures of regular PSU, so you see that cable management can be a headache.

To my best knowledge the recommended PSU manufactures are XFX, OCZ, Seasonic, Enermax and Corsair, I don't see so many complains about Thermaltake and Antec. Store brands and surprisingly cheap PSU should be avoided if you want stability and assurance that nothing will burn or PSU will last for long time with the same specs over the time.

Next I used Extreme PSU calculator to show that our standard PSU can support 7750 and Phenom 965 together, no PSU upgrade necessary, if no overclock.

System Type: 1 physical CPU
Motherboard: Regular - Desktop
CPU Socket: Socket AM3
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 C3 3400 MHz Deneb
CPU Utilization (TDP): 90% TDP
RAM: 2 Sticks DDR2 SDRAM
Video Card 1: AMD Radeon HD 7750

Regular SATA: 2 HDDs
DVD-RW/DVD+RW Drive: 1 Drive
USB: 4 Devices
Fans
Regular: 2 Fans 92mm;
LED: 1 Fan 92mm;
Keyboard and mouse: Yes
System Load: 90 %

Minimum PSU Wattage: 252 Watts
Recommended Wattage: 302 Watts

Inspiron 570 stock PSU is 300 watt and it is known that this number is somewhat underrated, so 302 watt is O.K. Now, PSU was in my Inspiron 570 model was HIPRO HP-P3017F3, below are the specs for anyone to chew.

+5V = 22A, +12V = 18A, +3.3V = 17A, +5V aux = 2A, -12V = 0.8A; Special comment "+5V and +3.3V SHALL NOT EXCEED 160 W".

If you need replacement, you can get it from here new for $38. Not exactly the same, but very similar.

UPDATE:

The Bios or Windows is currently not get known of the CPU.

But: It was possible to set the Multiplier and the Voltage to 15 and 3,5.

I dont know why but i cant pull more up the Multiplyer, it jumps back to 15.  -.- That is really annoing me.

So i have on al 6 Cors 3000Mhz.

I did OCCT, Prime, IntelBurnTestV2. Temps are not higher than 42 C°

It is stable. I can Play MadMax or NFSMW2 (*** game i now).

The Benchmarkscore now with this Settings is better than the Phenom 965 BL OC to 3,8Ghz with 1,45V in my Computer.

Not much better, but better.

But i would like to have the CPU OC to 3.8...or at first to 3,3 like the FactroryGhz. But that is now not Possible. I Think that is a securefeature of AMDOverdrive, because it is not known of the CPU Ether, a "Unknown Model".

I will try more und tell you if i have any progress, but i dont know now what else i can do. Any Suggestions? ;D

PS: I can Activate the TurboCore in AMDOverdrive and set there a second Multi and Voltage but it wont take it. So...it keep 3000.

So now i did some things.

It is possible to set the Multiplier to 15,5 so i have 3100MHZ on all six Cores.

I tryed all OC Programms i found and i have to say...i love AMD Overdrive :'D.

K10Sat is one of the OC tools i tryed. It only recognise the first CPU Core. So i can OC one Core to 3.8 as example and the rest stays at 3,1.

HOW i can set the Multiplier more Up in amd Overdrive, that is all i want. Bios and OS are still not get known of the CPU Model..who cares, it is running, its stable, it is fast, and the CPU is not above 45 C°. I only want to OC the Cpu to 3.8 or somthing.

The HT (HyperTransport) is running at 2200 MHZ, dont know why. Normal it is 2000 Mhz. I think thats because of the new CPU...who cares, its working and it is stable.

GTA5 is running better CPU is running at ca. 80%. So because i am the IT-Idiot of all my friends i had to buy a friend of mine a 970 GTX. So....i tryed somthing and built it in my Inspiron.

Wonderfull Grafik, sure GTA is running better, more FPS and so on.

BUT: GPU is used to ca. 60%, CPU is used to ca 80%. And i have 40-50 FPS...not 60FPS, i have framedrops and so on. I think more is not possible with the 4GJJT Mainboard....i thing the Mainboard is limiting now the whole system down. May i have a other problem or The Cpu is not running perfect because its a unknown CPU for my Computer. I dont know.

So if you have any suggestions please tell me. I would still like to OC my CPU ;D.

After all that:

The 1100T is with 3100MHZ faster than the 965BL with 3800Mhz in my Pc it is working more stable than the 965 BL. It is very cool, sure it is not OC. And i am at the absolute Limit of the Mainboard.

BUT I would NEVER recommend it. If you want to Upgrade your Inspiron take the 965BL because we have longtime experience. The Bios and Windows get known of the modell. And it is cheeper.

I dont know how long that consterlation is running without a Crash or somthing blow up.

The CPU is expencive, it is cheeper to buy a new mainboard and a new cpu.

I thing i invested in the Inspiron more than 500€ for Upgrade. The financially sapeckt....dont do it to expencive. I Only do it because i like it to do, i like to build and rebuild and upgrade PCs.

So two things i still want to do and i will try:
1. Set the ****** Multiplier in amd overdrive to the maximum possible...3.8 or so. But how to unlock it...in AMD Overdrive.

2. I will set the FSB more Up. But that is lockt in amd Overdrive and in other tools i need to now witch Clockgenerator i have built in. I find nothing in the internet, manuals or i tools.

If you can help me, please send me a message.

Greetings

Hello,

i installed a GTX 960 4GB and i have to say it was worth it. I can play GTA now on nearly all Settings all up.

(Except MSAA). Sure not always on 60 FPS but its okay for me. The CPU / GPU are not running always on 100% because as i sad somthing is limiting.

The 960 GTX MSI is so BIG...one mm more and i would need a new case :'D

Multiplier is at 15.5, FSB standard, GPU not OC. I would never say that the money is worth it. But the result is that in compraison with the 965 BE OC and the 660GTX OC the PC is running faster, better Graphik, its more stable, and its is very cool. It would be more difference if i can manage to put the multiplier more up than 15.5. But i will see if i can manage that.

But again. I dont know how long it works...i have no longtimeexperience. It could be that the PC brake down next week. I do  still not recommand my solution, it is only luck that it is working.

Greetings

Hello everyone and thank you Anthem123 for your post. I am following it since one year and it helped me a lot .

I just fill the post by saying that the Cooler Master Hyper TX3 Evo goes perfectly on the motherboard. Pins are clipped perfectly. We don't need a new backplate.

Then to remove the backplate , I used another method while inspiring me yours. I used pieces of plastic as you said , and then I put a screw in each location of the backplate and pushed gently with my thumbs . It comes off perfectly and quickly.

Hello there,

Okey, that is probably the best Aircooler for the normal Case ;D.

Do you have inside the AMD 965 BL, how are your Temperatures now with that big Cooler?

I am pleased that my posts helped a bit ;D.

& thanks for the Pics.

Hello,

I have the AMD 955 BE only for 1 game, Planetside 2. The temp in the idle is about 33/35°C, and when I play, 55/58°C. The temp never grow up until 61°c with OCCT.

Hello,

so i will repeat i do not recommand my Solution but i try to help you.

I had the same Problem if you read the last posts. read them, they will help you!

So my Solution is to Clock the CPU Up as high as possible. My CPU is now running on 3100MHZ overclocked with AMD Overdrive. I tried other tools to but they are much worse then AMD-Overdrive.

The normal clocked speed is 3300MHZ, but i am not able to higher it. For me it is no problem now because it is fast enough for me.

Just wanted to acknowledge this thread, it spurred me into action upgrading my little old 570 and it purrs like a kitten now. I couldn't find quite a few of the parts mentioned in this thread though because they're no longer made. If anyone can point me to a new cpu heatsink and fan combo that just pops in there and doesn't need a motherboard unscrewing I'd be very happy.

The noise had become awful coming off the default sink and fan, but I replaced the cpu fan with a very nice "silent wings 2", which was a plug and play replacement and I haven't heard the cpu fan since doing so at all.

I installed ASUS STRIX R9 380 - very easy install, works fine. 3 x 1920*1080 screens connected as 1 desktop (eyefinity) so amazingly immersive gaming. I also do a lot of graphics work, it's a dreamy graphics card.

Fyi, it only *just* squeezes in there, and a couple of the sockets at the back are hard for the cables to plug int (hdmi & displayport) because the metal of the case protrudes over them, but with a bit of wiggling it's fine. Better with displayport. Also if you're thinking about doing this get a new power supply unit first, mine is a 750w EVGA GQ 210 unit.

This card together with a bequiet fan make for an almost silent setup

Awesome thread kisianik! I have read over your post extensively and have learned a great deal about upgrading Dell Inspiron 570. Since many of these posts are few tears old, I have been having trouble finding a few parts you listed in the entire thread. I could have missed the correct information because this thread is very long.  Furthermore this is my first upgrade and build so I am a little unsure about what I am ordering.

Below are the specs to my computer:

Dell Inspiron 570

AMD Anthlon II X2 245 Porcessor 2.90 GHZ

4.00 GB of RAM

64 Bit OS, X64-based processor

My main goal is to create a version similar to yours 570, but on current components that are economical as well. I would like to upgrade the internal and external Hard Drives to SSD, Upgrade RAM, upgrade processor, and  video card.

I know you recommend the AMD Phenom II X4 965 AM3 3.4Ghz 512KB 45NM 125W, but I don't want to deal with extensive cooling issues. However, I do want to purchase the best X4 I can without adding extensive cooling parts. I would appreciate any guidance you can provide me in order to build the most up to date build components.   In total, I would like to keep this upgrade under $600. I appreciate your help.

Long time not been here.

As of now, if someone wants to spend more than 500 USD on upgrades:emotion-14:, I would definitely recommend getting new Dell Inspiron, just make sure that this model (new) can be upgraded further, as I noticed that Dell is cutting corners again with just enough juice and SPACE to run specific tasks.

I use my old I570 as a backup PC for the past almost 2 years. My Primary One is 4790K overclocked to 4.4:emotion-60: on Air with GTX 970 with 1900x1200 Dell Ultra Sharp screen (I don't need stronger GPU because of that screen) 500GB Samsung PRO SSD and many HDDs (WD REDs, Black and HGST) for the total of 17TB plus another 15TB or so in external HDDs, would it be External Drives or just removable regular HDDs, and they all are getting full!!![:'(]

It was a great time here with this upgrade. I am happy that many users followed my steps and even improved my, already perfect, system architecture.

Nifty rig there KISIANIK. Good to know ol' Bessy's still kicking. So, after nearly a year I'm back with a (somewhat) finished product. Upgraded cases to the HAF. Installed a AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Processor, Black Edition. A Thermaltake WATER 3.0 Dual Riing RGB High Static Pressure Fans 240 AIO Water Cooling System CPU Cooler

NOTE: I would HIGHLY recommend NOT getting the Thermaltake liquid cooler above as it doesn't fit this board without modification. I ended up chopping the elbow pieces from my Hyper TX3 to get it to fit the motherboard.

I've installed 2X8GB Kingston HyperX FURY bringing me up to 20 GB of ram. I've also upgraded to windows 10 pro to bypass the ram limit of 16GB on Windows 7 Home Premium. The 1100T runs really cool and rarely surpasses 29c on loads. I haven't really overclocked anything yet and get near 60fps Subnautica and Astroneer.

Fun little experiment full of many trials and errors. Thinking of naming my rig "The Black Knight" or something edgy like that. Happy Modding all :emotion-4:
