Inspiron 13 7000 (7347) Touch screen problem

I have a one-month old Inspiron 13 7000 which has seen very little use, because of the problem which will become self-evident.

Very early on (when the laptop was 3 days old) I noticed that it would do "ghost touching" on the screen.  These ghost touches were always along a vertical column about 2/3 of the way to the right of the screen. As can be expected, these ghost touches would wreak havoc with whatever I was doing.

The ghost touches would go away after some time.

Other times there would be a single ghost touch that would remain pressed continuously.

I ran the Dell hardware diagnostics and the first time I did, it reported touch screen miscalibration.  It then prompted me to clear all the cells (all 405 of them) after which the touch screen worked without incident for several hours.

Then the ghost touching came back.  This time when I tried to clear the cells (via the n-trig tool that the Dell diagnostics fires up) I found that the entire right side of the screen (past the ghost touch column) would no longer respond to touch.  So I was unable to clear the cells.

Later on the touch screen "fixed itself" again - except, the ghost column is not responsive to touch anymore (but the screen to the left and right of the ghost column do respond).

To say that I am peeved that a $1200 laptop has such a severe flaw is understating things, to put it mildly. "I should have gotten the Mac Pro Retina" is a thought that has run through my mind many times these past couple weeks.

I have also de-installed and re-installed the touch screen drivers, etc.  The machine is fully up to date as far as I can tell (I installed all the Dell software, self-update, etc. etc. etc.)

I took some screen shots and videos of the ghost touch in action, to substantiate what I've seen.

This is not a Windows driver problem - the ghost touch also happens when running the BIOS diagnostics.

Just a quick update regarding my laptop.

After receiving back from Dell with a new screen, hinges and body, the ghost touches ARE GONE! Been using it nightly for over a week and no trace at all of ghost touches. It feels like a heavier hinge almost. Cross my fingers it stays like this.

Wish I didn't have to go through this pain, and it has put me off buying Dell (especially when browsing this forum for other issues), but I'm now happy with the laptop. It has all of the functions and specs that I needed and is decent enough for lower end games that I enjoy.

Now just to fix the other issues with it - not Dell problems, but just Windows 8.1 bugs!

I have exactly the same ghost touches problem on my new Inspiron 7000 13 Full HD screen.

Temporary disable the touch screen in the Device Manager so that the notebook can be used normally.

Can't send it to Dell for repair as I need the notebook for daily work.

Will send for repair when I return to my home country.

Wow, this is a huge problem it sounds like.  Now I know why Microcenter had 17 open box items for this laptop.  People must be buying them and returning them immediately.  I took the first one home and the crazy screen was so out of control I couldn't even shut it down.  I didn't know about the screen flex trick.  Now I'm on my second one and it does it a lot less, but I called Dell and they said that if it doesn't go away they may have me send it in and get the LCD replaced.  Unless they have fixed the issue though that isn't going to help much.  I really love the thing too.  I researched a lot of laptops and for the money this one is hard to beat.  I really want a MS Surface Pro 3 but before I spent that money I would by a MacBook Air I think.  I have thirty days to return for refund, so going to play with it and keep Dell support on the hook every day if I have to.

I don't really want to reinstall software either.  How can Dell not know about something SO OBVIOUS!!  I hope they monitor these forums.

They actually said it was a VIRUS problem??  That's hilarious.  That's what you get when you farm your support out to India and they hire housewives to answer the phone!!

My experience wasn't quite that bad.  I took the second defective unit back to Micro Center and their service department admitted that out of a batch of 34 devices, over 20 of them came back and that it was a bad batch.  I took home a brand new one from a different production run and it seems to be fine. The only thing about new one is that it has a much lower quality network WiFi card, so I ordered a $30 Intel card for it that I will put in myself.

Take the unit back, get your money back and try a new one.  If it has the problem too, you may want to check Toshiba or Asus if you want a 2 in 1.

Good Luck to you!

I am having a similar problem with "screen ghosts" on an Inspiron 13" (7347). Dell Support has told me its a virus problem (since the BIOS hardward check came back 100% okay) and they could fix it with a $239 annual software contract. I have not chosen to take up their offer and want to find out what your more recent experience has been ... or any others passing through this forum. Thanks

My 2 cents - I ran through all of the diagnostics on the phone with tech support and they told me unequivocally that it must be a hardware issue with the screen itself. Unfortunately, they couldn't find a replacement screen or parts and kept delaying my repairs, so I'm trying to get a refund for mine now.

I'd be highly suspect anything they're trying to sell you - I really don't think there's a software fix for this.

Good luck! :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue!  I thought it was a fluke, days three through twelve, but now it's a recurring pestering issue.

I'll be calling Dell in the morning.  :/

Same problem here. Had the Inspiron 7000 series for a little over a month, but I have been using it heavily just this past week for school purposes. Of course now that I need it the ghost touches made this computer impossible to use. I had to deactivate the touch-screen to be able to use it. Definitely not the way I wanted to invest my money when I purchased it. I will call Dell tomorrow.

Oh my God. I have the same problem with my Inspiron 7347. And this is very annoying sometimes!

If you bought it recently and it is still within the return window, take it back for a new one.  I bought two and both were from a bad batch with same problem.  Micro Center stopped selling them and got in a new batch.  My third one was fine, except for a slow WiFi card, but that's a separate issue.

If you can't take back, call Dell and reference these forums and tell them you want it fixed.  They will replace the LCD panel. That fixes is too.

Good Luck!!

I have a Inspiron 11 3000 series and it's doing the same thing. I've had this laptop for a month but touch screen disabled for 3 weeks and a half.... tried it out today for fun and almost broke my mouse pad trying to disable it again when the ghost clicking continued....... I'm so disappointed!!!! :(
