Dell Latitude E5420 Max RAM Support

Hello there,

i wanted to know, what the max supported RAM for this Laptop is, because i want to upgrade the RAM.

The reason i ask is:

The next Latitude (Latitude E5440) seems to have a maximum of 16 GB RAM (https://www.dell.com/community/Laptops-General-Read-Only/Latitude-E5440-max-RAM/td-p/4548603)

While the Latitude which came before the E5420 had a maximum of 8 GB RAM, as far as i found out.

In the Documentery it says, it´s an maximum of 8 RAM (https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/common/5420_pdf_en_us.pdf), but as you can see in the first link, that was also said in the documentation of the E5440, so that´s why i´m asking myself now, if i might be able to use 16 GB instead of 8 GB RAM.

Also according to this page here, 16 GB should be possible:

https://www.compuram.de/arbeitsspeicher/dell/notebook/latitude/5000-series/e5420/?st=tab_maxmem

I hope you might be able to help me.

Every site I have looked at and the Dell specs specify 8 GB total as the maximum system RAM. I usually go to Crucial for the ultimate authority and they specify 8 GB total as well.

Welcome to the Dell Community  @Zeromix

Most documentation says 8GB max.

What CPU do you have installed???

If needed I can pull one from my warehouse in the morning and test it for you???

Let me know about the CPU and if you want me to test 16GB and a W10 install???

Best regards,

U2

Thank you.

I´ve installed an I5-2430M CPU.

And it would be pretty helpful, if you could test that with 16 GB of RAM on an Windows 10 OS.

No problem @Zeromix

I'm trying to make a W10 image for every model I have in the warehouse.

If I have not completed an E5420 image already then I will start one in the morning.

If I already have an image archived I will still try a fresh W10 install.

But first I will install 16GB of memory and boot to BIOS.

If that tests OK then I will start a fresh W10 install.

U2

NOTE:

Your CPU is capable of 16GB.

@Zeromix

First.

The unit I pulled from my warehouse is an E5420 i5-2520m  BIOS ver. A05

I installed your i5-2430m and upgraded the BIOS to the latest ver. A14

Then installed 16GB DDR3L-12800s 11-13-F3 memory.

Booted to BIOS with no problem.

I just started to install W10 Pro 64bit

Let you know how things go after it installs.

Hello, So I read through this chat and I am having a very similar problem. I am looking to buy a dell latitude E5420 0r E5620. It is from discount computer depot and they allow you to customize it before they sell it to you. I am going to buy that computer with an i7 processor and everywhere I look it says 8GB of ddr3 RAM is the max I can put in. I am just running into the problem of will it fit? looking at the pictures of 4GB ddr3 RAM and 8 GB ddr3 ram the 8GB looks much longer. Did you fit the 8GB RAM into the laptop and manage to close it?

Welcome to the Dell Community  @juswonderin

Make sure the memory you purchase is for a laptop.

Desktop memory is to big and will not fit in a laptop.

got it! I appreciate the info. @U2CAMEB4ME

I have another question @U2CAMEB4ME  so I am going to put 16gb of RAM into a Dell latitude E5420 with an i7 processor and 1 tb drive calls for ddr3 1066 RM but I want something much faster If I put in ddr3 2133 RAM will it wait a lot faster. I have read that no matter how many MHz the RAM can output the motherboard will only operate at it's max MHz and buying ram that fast is a waste of money. Is this true ? If so what is or how do I don't the max MHz RAM my laptop will use? Any suggestions for increasing speed and GHz in this laptop are welcome.

when i typed dmidecode command with fedora 32:

$ dmidecode --type memory|head -7

Physical Memory Array
Location: System Board Or Motherboard
Use: System Memory
Error Correction Type: None
Maximum Capacity: 16 GB
Error Information Handle: Not Provided
Number Of Devices: 2

it says, you have maximum 16 gb ram capacity.

8 GB ram ddr3 1600mhz  in each module, or 16gb ram ddr3 1600mhz in only one module, please?
