PowerDVD DX issue

System - two weeks old:
First time Dell owner, first time Laptop owner
XPS 1640
Vista Home Premium 64-bit, Service Pack 2
Optiarc DVDRWBD BC-5600 SATA (DVD/Blu-Ray Combo)
PowerDVD DX 8.2.5202

I previously played both DVD and Blu-Ray disks using PowerDVD DX. Today I tried both a DVD and a Blu-Ray disk and they would not play.
When I insert a disk I hear the disk spin up, the little circle next to the mouse cursor spins for a second then goes away, and nothing happens.
If I go thru Start/Programs and double-click on PowerDVD DX to start it up, the same thing happens. Even with no disk in the drive same thing happens.
I can explore/browse to the DVD/Blu-Ray drive and see the files on the disk, and access files.
Appears the drive is working/reading the DVD and Blu-Ray disks, but PowerDVD won't kickoff properly to display the videos.
I went to Cyberlink website and downloaded the newest update for PowerDVD 8 but when I try to install/update it says the upgrade won't work for my product.
Dell website says to try re-installing PowerDVD from disk labeled "For Reinstalling Cyberlink PowerDVD DX 8.0 Software for DVD Playback" but that disk was not included with my PC. I can view DVDs using Windows Media Player.
Don't know what the issue is or how to solve it, any help would be great!

Well, I tested a resolution with the 2000 pound gorilla in the corner. I installed my Windows 7 RTM upgrade as a new install and then installed the Drivers, Quickset tool, Kaspersky, Roxio, and PowerDVD DX. It seems to work on this baseline configuration. I am going to so this again and take a ghost image this weekend.

I guess Windows 7 really does fix everything in the world...

Lets see if it continues to work over the next few months.

I too upgraded to Windows 7 then reinstalled PowerDVD DX from the original Dell CD-ROM. Everything's working great now! And Windows Media Center works better than ever too! I'm very satisfied now.

It's working for me with these steps
- I installed powerDVD DX for a second time
- I updated powerDVD via the menu item

I have a Studio 15, core i7 and Windows 7

Directly when I received my new laptop I tried to watch a blue ray film. I saw a short sequence then the software stopped telling me that I do not have the correct country code, I tried a second time, saw another short sequence, but it stopped again with a cryptic errorcode. I made a reboot. Unfortunatelly in the meantime, the dell computer installed some microsoft updates, with the result, that the blue ray was not accepted by the computer any more, Inserting the disk had no effect,.

I thought that the problem is the microsoft Update and decided to wait some time. 10 Days later, after a few more updates from microsoft I tried again, but nothing happened.

I tried to start the software powerDVD directly, but it did not start. So I decided to install powerDVD again. I used the dell CD including powerdvd 8.2 and 8.3.
Then, I was able to start the software successfully and I saw the start menue. I inserted the blue ray and I could see the complete film.

After this first successs, I tried different things, but I was not successfull. I could not start the software by inserting the disk, I was not able to start the
powerDVD for a second time. So, I rebooted the laptop, started powerDVD and made an update via the menu item. It is now Version 8.3.5714
and It is working fine.

Hope this helps

I am running Windows Vista 64-bit, SP2.  I had been running PowerDVD DX 8.2.xxxx (perhaps 5202) without a problem, but hadn't done an "Update" for quite some time.  We rented Julie and Julia last night, which forced an update; couldn't run the movie without it.  So I did the update and ran into all sorts of issues, all of which led to no way to run Blu-ray discs at all - even older discs.

Tried also to install PowerDVD 9 trial and that didn't work (the format of the disc is not supported).

BUT - I did finally have success.  This is what I did.

First I uninstalled all PowerDVD versions (v9 and the 8.2 that was on the system).

Then I installed the original PowerDVD DX version from the CD I got with the machine (Dell Studio 540).  This was version 8.1.

I then ran PowerDVD and tried to view a Blu-ray movie.  It would not run without an Update, so I did the "Online Update".

This downloaded and installed 8.2.5202.  I could then view Dark Knight, but not Julie and Julia (which just came out).  Trying to view Julie and Julia forced an update, so I (hesitantly) did it.  This update both downloaded a new "patch" utility and then the next update.

I proceeded to install the update, which was (the dreaded) 8.2.5711 (again).  After installing, I ran Dark Knight - Success!  And then tried Julie and Julia - Success!

So perhaps there was one or more updates in between which are causing the issues which are avoided when we go through this update process in this way?

In summary, go back to the original PowerDVD 8.1 and then follow the updates in sequence.  Of course, this is only proven to work with this configuration.

My situation is very similar to the OP.  Win 7 Pro x64 on a brand-new Studio XPS 1640 with the ATI 4670, RGBLED display and PowerDVD DX.

PowerDVD DX when downloaded from Dell installs as v8.3.5424.  When patched via the PDVD updater it is v8.3.5714.

When I push the Star Trek (2009) BD into the drive, I see only a few seconds of the opening Paramount animation -- video only, no audio -- then playback freezes while the stars are still flying into the frame.  I can stop the movie, browse the PDVD menus and even make changes, but if I restart the movie it freezes as before.

The problem does not occur with PowerDVD Ultra 9 trial.

It seems altogether unfair that I should have to shell out $100 to play BD movies on my brand-new notebook, when it was advertised with BD playback capability.  It also seems that several of you, if not most of you, agree with me.  Come on, Dell.  Give us what we paid for - a functional BD player.

My situation:

Win 7 Pro x64 on a Studio XPS 1640 with the ATI 4670, RGBLED display and PowerDVD DX update to the latest patch(v8.3.5714).

As inserting The Dark Knight Blu-ray DVD into the drive, it was just stuck at the "loading" screen and then PowerDVD DX shut down directly without any error msg or notice.

Furthrmore, my problem is more complicated. I cannot play Blu-ray DVD either on PowerDVD 8 Ultra which is also updated with the latest patch for Win7.

My ODD is HLDS CA10N which is updated to the latest formware, version A108, as well.

I was trying to fix this problem for almost one week.......so tired and angry!

I don't know if this problem is caused by Win7, PowerDVD DX or 8 Ultra, ATI gfx driver, or ODD.

Hope Dell will give us a solution ASAP!!

I was having a similar problem.  I figured out that I had not played a bluray on my 1640 since I had upgraded to Windows 7 (64bit).  I played with it quite a bit to try to get it to play a bluray with many discs and finally contacted Dell support.  They uninstalled PowerDVD DX 8.??? and installed the trial version of 9 (which I don't like).  It then said "unrecognizable disc format".  They put in a call to have my drive replaced.  It has not been replaced yet.

I did some more reading online and Windows 7 does not have bluray support included.  I then decided to try to run PowerDVD 9 in Vista and XP modes.  XP mode seems to be working.  I located the executable file for PowerDVD 9 by right clicking on the shortcut on my desktop then selected the Compatibility tab and put a check in the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and selected "Windows XP (Service Pack 3).  So far, accept for some jumping with some discs, it seems to be working fine.

I would like to see if anybody can fix the problem with PowerDVD DX 8.??? by doing the same thing.  I can't try it because I don't have it anymore.

Try it and let me know if it works.

Thanks.

Hello

First post so forgive any mistakes but I have been working on this problem for days and for me.... I solved my Major Issues 2nite...I was able finally 2 view 2 Blu-Ray movies that had previously just laughed at me when trying to play.

Firstly got my new Studio XPS 435MT Desktop on 08.01.2010 or for our American Friends 01.08.2010...Running now on Windows 7 x64, upgrade from Vista x64 and had the same or similar issues after upgrading to PowerDVD DX v8.3.5714..via the usual channels ie Dell Upgrades.

The Hurt Locker Blu-Ray worked fine from the start so I thought I was there, but then I tried one of my Christmas Presents...Star Trek Blu-Ray but it only got as far as trying to select the Language then no further.. similar with the movie Pelham 123 got through to the intro but would not select play when it reached selecting the appropriate Language...in my case English.

All until 2nite I finally installed my Remote Control.. plug in the IR USB and away we go ....with regard to Star Trek it has allowed me to select the Language and then it fired up everything else and is playing away in the background now.. and as for Pelham 123 it enabled the selections as shown at the start of the Movie ie. Play...Chapter Selection and so on, so I selected play as in OK Button on the Remote and away it went...Thank goodness for a Dell Windows Media Player Remote.

Just not ideal yet though Pelham 123 got more jumpy and unstabled as it went on but as for Quality...Yes that is what I was looking for superb..ther dosn't seem to be the same jitteryness with Star Trek.

I Hope for someone this will help solve their issues...Yipee! role on Star Trek far better than watching those old DVD's.

I have also had terrible problems with PowerDVD DX.  It used to work once upon a time but now, for no reason, it has stopped playing BD. I don't know why this happened because I played a BD fine last night but today it ceased working, I didn't change any settings.  The program is suggesting that I reinstall it.  However...

Despite Dell's insistence to the contrary, I did not receive an installation disc for Cyberlink software and I am unable to download the software on the Dell website: "Contact application vendor for assistance."  I refuse to buy Power DVD 9.  I deserve functional BD-playing software or a full refund.  This has been just one problem in a series of problems in trying to get Blu-rays to play on my brand new Dell.

If anyone finds a serious solution to this problem, please let us know.  Clearly, there are several of us who are at a loss for what to do next.

I bought my new XPS 9000 with an upgraded monitor, graphics card and blu-ray drive..After receiving the computer and getting everything set up I decided to try the bluray. It was terrible, choppy playback, stuttering audio and  glitchy menu. I didn't have time to mess around with it so I waited until today. Now when I put in a bluray it loads to the Main menu and freezes. It somehow manages to play all the splash screens. In addition if I put a "store bought" dvd into either of my drives Power dvd dx tells me they are the wrong region and do I want to change my player region?? And that I can do that 5 times...This is unbelievable... I downloaded a VLC player and it plays regular dvd's fine.My schedule is super busy and to have to deal with this situation is ridiculous. I guess the first thing to try is getting a Cyberlink installation disc from dell. Version 8.3.5714 came installed on the computer.

Well I just got off the phone with tech support. They decided that the bluray drive is bad and are sending an onsite tech to install a new one. I don't agree with this, I believe its software related but I guess we'll find out. The drive plays regular dvd's without problem and actually loads a bluray to the menu. I told support that we should try reinstalling the Power dvd software so they're sending a disc to the onsite tech as well...

sig98, your hunch is right.  There's nothing wrong with your blu-ray drive.  DELL also sent out a technician to my house and he replaced the entire optical drive.  It worked for about 2 hours (poorly, with skipping and unreliable playback) and then it suddenly just stopped working.  There is a problem with PowerDVD and DELL has no fix for it...they are just trying to appease you by giving you a new drive.  I've been so frustrated with this issue that I decided to return my computer to DELL for a full refund.

The only reason I chose DELL over other computer models is because it had what looked like a good integrated Blu-ray player but since that is not the case I returned the computer.

Yeah and now I have to worry about whether or not the Tech knows what he's doing or if I'll have some newbie poking around in my new computer.

After much frustration I put this issue on  the backburner for a few months. Recently I logged into Dell and under the download area authorized for my PC, I downloaded the PowerDVD software and re-installed it. I immediately ran the update feature of PowerDVD. This seems to have fixed the issue. But for some blu-rays, when the main menu comes up, I cannot click on 'play' in the menu with the mouse, I need to use the 'enter' key instead to actually start the movie. And for some blu-ray movies, it takes for ever to load up, like the movie 'Gamer', takes MINUTES to pre-load. I tried it in my stand-alone blu-ray player and 'Gamer' also took minutes to pre-load, so decided the long load time wasn't really the PC/software fault, only Sony's.
