PowerDVD DX issue

System - two weeks old:
First time Dell owner, first time Laptop owner
XPS 1640
Vista Home Premium 64-bit, Service Pack 2
Optiarc DVDRWBD BC-5600 SATA (DVD/Blu-Ray Combo)
PowerDVD DX 8.2.5202

I previously played both DVD and Blu-Ray disks using PowerDVD DX. Today I tried both a DVD and a Blu-Ray disk and they would not play.
When I insert a disk I hear the disk spin up, the little circle next to the mouse cursor spins for a second then goes away, and nothing happens.
If I go thru Start/Programs and double-click on PowerDVD DX to start it up, the same thing happens. Even with no disk in the drive same thing happens.
I can explore/browse to the DVD/Blu-Ray drive and see the files on the disk, and access files.
Appears the drive is working/reading the DVD and Blu-Ray disks, but PowerDVD won't kickoff properly to display the videos.
I went to Cyberlink website and downloaded the newest update for PowerDVD 8 but when I try to install/update it says the upgrade won't work for my product.
Dell website says to try re-installing PowerDVD from disk labeled "For Reinstalling Cyberlink PowerDVD DX 8.0 Software for DVD Playback" but that disk was not included with my PC. I can view DVDs using Windows Media Player.
Don't know what the issue is or how to solve it, any help would be great!

Thank you chperry...I last posted on the 23 Feb 2010 about the Cyberlink PowerDVD DX issues that I was having with my Dell Studio XPS 435MT Desktop on 08.01.2010 or for our American Friends 01.08.2010...8GB ram, NVidia GTX260 with 1.8GB, 2x 1TB hard drives using linked by RAID 0.

Since your post I have taken the bull by the horns and removed the Raid 0 settings; (which I was not happy with), so the I now have full use of both 1TB hard drives and clean installed Windows 7...so erasing all the annoying and corrupt Dell software. I have now reloaded all the software that I need and yes of course now the PowerDVD DX software works perfectly....Blu-Ray has never been better I can now relax and enjoy the movie experience, instead of coping with frustrating continous interupted playback.

I know that my method was more time consuming than just uninstalling the Dell Datasafe software, but I now finally have the setup that I should have had when I received my new Dell computer in January...and yes I have to agree Dell should have addressed their software issues first.

Thank you again

I had the same problem my disk did not work, drive made noises but  it was not responding , I tried everything and all I did was run the window task manager and just hit the button that says"switch to" and that seem to work and the disk played..

hope it works for you.

I also downloaded the patch for it. It didn't do any for it.

good luck

I have not been able to post a support ticket about this, email support, or get any phone support, I keep getting dropped. How frustrating!!!

WHAT a deal. you get a dell. and you dont know what you are getting into!! how frustrating.. I have a Brand new machine.

only a few days old. xps 435t/9000 i7 920 6GB tri Channel memmory.

Dvd and blue ray played wonderfully, then I try today, the bluray does not work anymore.

No idea why. can browse the drive, I am not able to play.

I have had powerDVD DX ver 8.3.1.6.107. No update option ever available. always grayed out. wether a dvd or BD is in the drive or not.

So I took the advice of another post and installed a trial version of powerdvd it happnes to be ver 10. it runs great..

The Dell PowerDVD DX does not run or play bd still. I was hoping that what ever registry issues or problems would be fixed, but, the new release probably is the reason.... My PowerDVD DX does play dvds though..

Also. I did not get any installation software with my dell either, no restor CD no installation cd no pwerdvd DX cds.. WHAT EVER

Dell deleted my last post because I layed into them abit..  about this issue, saying it should be fixed.. The facts speak loud enough!

Now I understand more about it, Thanks for your analysis!

Same problem here, PowerDVD DX installs and runs fine from the original CD included with my system. But, when I launch it, I am prompted to update a critical component of the software. If I choose update, it fails and then won't play any Blu-ray discs. The only solution is to uninstall and reinstall. Now I just ignore the critical update warning and everything works fine. This only began happening after Vista SP2 was installed.

I know it's something stupid, Why this? Could you give more details?
you mean its something vista sp2 causes the problem?

This is a faulty analogy... Apple does not do BluRay...

While I think it is ridiculous that I had to shell out $100 of my own money to get working software to playback BluRay, there you have it.

I second this experience.  Same problem here, $70 Blue Ray upgrade wasted, a full year's worth of great feedback on the problem and Dell does nothing.  I'm on my second third and last Dell computer.  It isn't 1998 anymore, playing a DVD shouldn't require checking in with a forum.  Apple would never let this happen.

Hey Guys,

So I just got my new inspiron N5010 laptop and seem to be having the same problem playing Blu Ray discs with the Powerlink DVD DX 8.3.1.6107 version. DVD's play fine but I get the same frozen loading screen every time I try to play  a blu ray disc. The player worked properly the first time I tried to use it but has not worked since I performed the update on the player. I have looked through all of the posts and am not sure about the best option.

My temporary solution was downloading a trial version of power dvd 10, but it only lasts for 30 days and I refuse to pay for their software after spending $100 on this blu ray disc combo that dell promoted on their website.

My computer did not come with the powerlink disc and judging from the other posts, it did not seem like re-installing powerlink was helpful or not. Thoughts??? The other thing I'm debating about doing is un-installing Data Safe since a few posts said that the software in that program conflicts with the powerlink software for some reason.

I have downloaded every patch from powerlink 8 from the cyberlink website and get the same thing every time, that the software is not compatible with the version I have on my laptop since it is from Dell. This seems to be the same problem everyone is having as well. Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED since I'm already at witts end with this new laptop.

Please respond if you think that I should request the powerlink installation disc from Dell, un-install the Data Safe program, or any other solution that has actually worked. Thanks!!!

Unfortunately, nothing works. My next laptop will not be a Dell. This is a prevalent problem that they have refused to fix. I ended up buying new software. That said, this thread is a year old and has died multiple times. You might do better with a new thread. I know I would ignore this one if I saw it on the forum for the first time a year since its inaugural post.

Well, the only thing that fixed it for me was an UPADTED powerDVD.

Dell finally sent it to me, and it indeed fixed my problem on my dell XPS 435T

the new powerDVD10 trail played my blurays, then it expired, so I knew it was a software issue.

Contact dell  and have them send you the new powerDVD!!

After experiencing the same "works one day, then quits" on my new studio 1747 Win 7, I tried downloading powereDVD 10.  It fails in exactly the same way as

the older versions... for me, that's beautiful sound, but no BD video at all....Otherwise, it is completly functional.  Dell wants me to wipe my HD and start over,

and to reinstall all my apps and data.  I don't see this as a viable solution.....  especially as I don't think it would work.

I have had my xps 1640 for 3 years now...always played DVDs blu rays fine....and well as others have mentioned above, it poops out.

Its sad that there are people out there who despite paying too much for the laptop as it was, will dole out more money to dell / cyberlink during what appears to be a planned obsolesence maneuver

so to the people on this post who have had this problem and moved passed dell and/or cyberlink what worked?

My Windows Media play will not play the DVDs either....gets the FBI screen but thats it

what programs are worth purchasing?  It sucks, but I can tel you I will get a functioning system and not depend on dell or cyberlink any more

they have wasted my time and money and its business...im done

please offer recommendations as to what to do next that does not involved paying any of these clowns any more cash than they have already stolen.

thanks
