Can't install SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools

I am using Support Assist on a Dell XPS 15 9570 on Windows 10. I have the latest bios version and the latest windows update as of 7/18/2020. I try to update the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools via the Dell SupportAssist tool but it keeps failing. Should I try uninstalling and re-installing it? If so, how do I do that on Windows 10?

Hi,

i've been facing the same issue.. searching through internet found this interesting post
In three words, all you have to do is: 1. close Support Assist app. 2. open  Dell (or Alienware) Update app, check for the update, download and install it. 3 rerun Support Assist app, click "do all" button in the upper right corner, wait until it is done, Profit   In my case it helped to solve this annoying update problem.

Hi Areska:

I tested again today and don't see any change with my Inspiron 15 5584 laptop.

What is your computer model and operating system, what are your current versions of Dell Update and Dell SupportAssist, and what version number of the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools did Dell Update install?

My Inspiron 5584 has a 64-bit Win 10 Pro v1909 Build 18363.1139 OS. I re-installed both Dell Update v4.0.0 and Dell SupportAssist v3.7.0.148 on 18-Nov-2020. I ran Dell Update v4.0.0 today and it found two available updates - the Intel Serial IO Driver v30.100.2020.7_A05 and the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.2.2.12981 as shown below.

Dell Update v4_0_0 Two Updates Found 22 Nov 2020.png

The Intel Serial IO Driver installed successfully, but the update for the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.2.2.12981 still fails, and the link to the full documentation for that v5.2.2.12981 update (circled in green in the image above) at .  still says "No Drivers found. It may be the link you followed to get here is not working or the content you are looking for has been removed and is no longer available".

Hi @lmacri :

My computer model is Alienware m15 with pre-installed Windows 10 Home. I have Alienware Update v4.0.0 and Dell Support Assist v3.7.0.148 . Today Dell Support Assist again found an update for Support Assist OS Recovery Tools version 5.2.2.12981, so I cautiously ran update check on my Alienware Update first ( didn't tried to go via link though like you described earlier, just clicked to install it), and only then made "do all" thing in Dell Support Assist. It worked again and no updates were found.  I suppose it's some kind of software issue that Dell will hopefully solve.

Hi Areska:

Things are going from bad to worse on my Inspiron 5584. I followed the steps you suggested that worked on your Alienware m15 with Alienware Update v4.0.0 and Dell Support Assist v3.7.0.148, but just like "Get Drivers & Downloads", my "Run All" scan in Dell Support Assist v3.7.0.148 still detects one available update for SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.2.2.12981 (not the v5.3.0.13847 mentioned <here> by inSystems) and continues to get stuck at "Downloading 0 of 180 MB"  if I choose to install.

Unfortunately, I've also discovered that "Run All" in my re-installed DSA v3.7.0.148 (perhaps the Clean Files scan of the System Optimization?) is corrupting Windows Update - see my thread Dell SupportAsssist v3.7.0.148 "Run All" Breaks Windows Update (Win 10 v1909).

Hi Imacri:

You should not try to install this update via Dell Support Assist app. Run ONLY Dell Update app ( Dell Support Assist app must be TURNED OFF ), check for updates, DON'T GO through links to Dell site( even if you really want to ) , just INSTALL this update. Then CLOSE Dell Update, RUN Dell Support Assist, DO "Run All" scan.
It helped in my case though I tried to install this update for 7 hours filled with anger and frustration ( joke ). If this still won't help I suggest you to contact people in Dell Support, because it's their product you're having problem with. Hope you'll find a solution eventually).

 Hi Areska:

As I said, I tried your instructions as written with my Inspiron 5584 and they didn't work. My first attempt to install the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.2.2.12981 update was via Dell Update v4.0.0 (not Alienware Update v4.0.0) with Dell SupportAssist closed and I received the same "0 of 1 successful - 1 update failed" message that I showed in my 19-Nov-2020 image <above>. Here's a newer image showing my previous check for updates was 25-Nov-2020 at 11:21 AM when this Dell Update scan failed:

Dell Update v4_0_0 SupportAssist OS Recovery Tool Install Failed 25 Nov 2020.png

After that, I closed Dell Update and tried a "Run All" with Dell SupportAssist v3.7.0.148 to refresh the "Get Downloads & Driver" scan, and the install once again got stuck at "Downloading 0 of 180 MB" and would not Cancel (forcing me to abort the failed download by closing the DSA interface) as shown in my image below.

Hi Miker5897:

Dell Update v4.0.0 and Dell SupportAssist v3.7.0.148 appear to be working again on my Inspiron 5584 as of 03-Dec-2020 now that Dell has pulled the problematic SupportAssist OS Recovery Tool v5.2.2.12981 update from their update servers and released a newer SupportAssist OS Recovery Tool v5.3.0.13847.

I ran Dell Update v4.0.0 today and it successfully installed the new SupportAssist OS Recovery Tool v5.3.0.13847 (see image below), and a subsequent Dell SupportAssist v3.7.0.148 "Get Drivers & Downloads" check correctly reported my PC is up-to-date.

I got it to work finally!

Please repeat the steps below and confirm if it works for you!

1) I opened Dell update/Alienware update and unchecked the "SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools" package to clear the file cache.

2) I closed the update tool and restarted the PC

3) I followed the instructions in the link below to disable Automatic repairs on windows(The link has instructions to Re-enable automatic repairs after the update is complete): Disable/Enable Automatic Repairs

4) I ran Dell update and re-downloaded "SupportAssist OS recovery Tools" package and installed. This ran for about 10-15 minutes but did not hang, and it did complete successfully! (hurray)

5) I re-enabled automatic repairs from the command prompt following the instructions in the link above.

6) Restarted my PC and ran Dell update to confirm the update was finished, and showed no new updates.

Please confirm for yourselves but this method worked for me!

-Jason

P.S. Dell can you please fix the error handling in your packages, this is obviously an un-handled exception causing the installer to hang

Hello. Yesterday the update for SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools was installed. Then, I reboot my laptop to check how it was installed and only a light blue screen is displayed for a minute. Then the computer shuts down. I tried several times and it always happens the same.actualiz.jpgIMG_20201229_105658612[110].jpgIMG_20201229_105736535[111].jpg

SupportAssist OS Recovery Tool is no longer available as an update through SupportAssist, Dell Update, or support.dell.com. Instead, it can be downloaded from here:

https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/osiso/recoverytool

Further documentation can be found here:

It is probably a waste of bandwidth to issue a nearly 1 GB operating system image that will be outdated in a matter of months, and b/c SAOSRT now has the option to download the most recent OS version anyway.

From Dell Update the missing update can be observed as follows:

Hi samus1:

This topic was created in July 2020 about a specific problem with the installation of the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.2.2.12981. Most users participating in this thread reported on page 4 that the problem was solved in December 2020 after Dell pulled the buggy v5.2.2.12981 installer and released SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.3.0.13847.

As I noted in my 03-Aug-2021 thread SupportAssist OS Recovery v5.4.3.15135 Not Creating System Repair Points , my SupportAssist auto-updated to v3.10.1.23 on 29-Jul-2021, and when I tried to view the Home tab I discovered that an ~ 350 MB update for SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.3.15135 was being installed on my system without my permission (note that I have all automatic update and optimization scans DISABLED in SupportAssist at Options (gear icon) Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations | Scan Your System and Drivers). Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features confirms that I currently have Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.4.3.15135, and as far as I know SupportAssist v3.x and Dell Update v4.x will still be responsible for delivering future updates for the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools to my Inspiron laptop. I can't tell you if that's also true for your XPS laptop.

See my post in Desmodus1984's Inspiron 5570 - SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools Downloads But Not Installing  about the difference between the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.x and the Dell OS Recovery Tool v2.x you mentioned in your 25-Sep-2021 post <above>.  Note that I currently have SupportAssist OS Recovery / Dell SupportAssist Remediation DISABLED on my system and use Macrium Reflect Free v7.x for creating emergency USB recovery media and the occasional full disk image of my entire hard drive.

If the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools updates are not installing correctly on your laptop and you want to use this recovery software it's possible that a clean reinstall of SupportAssist could fix your problem.  See employee DELL-Chris M's instructions at SA Uninstall / Reinstall, which note that all programs related to SupportAssist (including Dell SupportAssist Remediation and Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update) must be removed before reinstalling Dell SupportAssist.

Thanks, I'll give it a try (I actually wanted SupportAssist OS Recovery updated before making a new image with Macrium).

I prefer SupportAssist when reinstalling a fresh, up-to-date version of Windows directly from Dell that contains all supported drivers and Dell software before selling or gifting, or starting over, like with Windows 11 (though will probably be upgrading through Windows Update first, since Dell may not have Windows 11 available any time soon, if ever, for my model).

As far as the differences, one is launched from it's own boot menu partition, the other from a USB drive.

Hi samus1:

As far as I know the Dell OS Recovery Tool v2.x at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/drivers/osiso/recoverytool is a small utility that can create a USB recovery media to reboot your system from a USB thumb drive and "remove all data and software from your PC's hard drive and restore the factory-installed operating system" (i.e., reinstall the original operating system and drivers installed at the factory - see the instructions at How to Download and Use the Dell Operating System Recovery Image in Microsoft Windows), but unlike the full SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.x, it does not actually create daily system restore points (snapshots) on your hard drive that can be used to roll back your system a few days or weeks if your system becomes unstable. If you have the full SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.x (which include System Repair / Dell SupportAssist Remediation) you should be able to launch the SupportAssist OS Recovery settings manager at Control Panel | System and Security | SupportAssist OS Recovery ...

WIn 10 v20H2 COntrol Panel System and Security SupportAssist OS Recovery Panel 07 Jul 2021.png

...and Settings | System Repair should display the dates of your recently created system repair points (note that my image below was captured before I disabled System Repair / Dell SupportAssist Remediation in May 2021 and started using Macrium Reflect Free disk images for emergency recovery).

SupportAssist OS Recovery Control Panel Manager Settings System Repair Enabled 22 May 2021.png

See the images and comments I posted on 14-Aug-2021 in rincon285's thread SupportAssist Questions about how you can check if the full SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.x (System Repair / Dell SupportAssist Remediation) are installed on your system and creating daily system repair points (snapshots) in the hidden C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ folder.

Good to know, thought it was only for restoring OS to factory. I'll be sure to look these articles over, thanks.

So are the restore points that "normal" SupportAssist creates before updating drivers also stored as snapshots to the same location that OS Recovery does (C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\SnapShots), or are these "normal" Windows restore points?

This folder was empty on my 9570, but will check on my other model too.

I prefer backups myself, and am spec-ing out a storage solution, since swapping around an external drive port isn't the greatest, especially when it's a USB 2.0 connected SATA HDD.
