Dell desktop running extremely slow

My dell desktop is running extremely slow.  I run disk deframenter, spybot search and destroy, Lavasoft Adaware, Malware bytes, and AVG free periodically.  I have run Trend Micro Hijack this, but don't know what to do with the results.  Can someone analyze and give me a recommendation?

Thank you.

What if I downloaded Windows 7, then tried to download Internet Explorer 9?

I can't get it open.  The only tools I could find were system tools and then when I click on internet explorer I get an hourglass for about a second and nothing happens.  When I go into the control panel and click on Internet Options, I get the same thing.  Hourglass for a second then nothing.

The only tools you need to worry about are located on the Internet Explorer Page. If the Page will not stay open long enough for you to click the tools icon, then it will not work.

Please do not alter any other settings.

I know we have tried this, but please try again.

Go to "Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > In the Add/Remove Programs window > Click the box in the top right hand Corner next to "show update" > then scroll down to Internet Explorer 8 > Click it once > Click the uninstall/remove button.

Let me know what happens or what message you get. If it allows the uninstall, please follow the prompts uninstall.

Let me know what happens.

Thanks.

Yes.  I tried this again.  It all seems to run smoothly until it can't find some files.  I then browse and find them, but one of the last files, it won't open or retry.  So, I cancel the unstall.  What I did find, was that there are two IE8 folders in Windows.  One says ie8 and the other ie8(2).  It's getting hung up there.  It's missing some files.  The last one was some file that ended in000, then when I select it, the uninstall program doesn't recognize it.  It's like it gets stuck.

Please try this:

  1. Carefully select and then copy the following command:
    %windir%\ie8\spuninst\spuninst.exe
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type Cmd.exe, and then press ENTER.
  4. Right-click inside the Cmd.exe window, and then click Paste to paste the command that you copied in step 1.
  5. Press ENTER to uninstall Internet Explorer 8.
  6. When the uninstall program is finished, restart your computer.

If you are prompted for files to locate, please write down each one and let me know know if you are picking ones from the IE8 folder or the IE8(2) folder.

Thanks

Same story.  Here are the files it can't find when it is doing it's copying bit:

ieakmmc.chm

ieeula.chm

iesupp.chm

iexplore.chm

inetres.chm

html.iec

All were found in IE8(2) and I hit "retry" and it seemed fine until it got to the following file:

ieencode.dll.ooo which I found in IE8(2) but when I select it and go back to the error message it doesn't select it or open it.  The message says : THe file 'ieencode.dll.ooo' on Windows NT Service Pack Uninstall Directory is needed.

Hi,

Please follow all the steps in this Microsoft Knowledge Base and let me know if any of them fix the issue.

Also, do you only get the "Not a valid Win 32 app" message when trying to install IE8 or is it for all installers?

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > and then uninstall MalwareBytesAnti-Malware, then reboot the system and then please download and install a fresh version from HERE, There is no need to run a scan with it, although it will not hurt if you want to, my main concern is whether the installer will work.

Let me know.

Thanks

It appears that the only installation program that is a problem is that IE8.  Should I try it again?

Hi meg,

We know know that it is just IE8 that is failing to install. Thats good.

Few things:

1) Do you still have saved to the desktop the reg patch that I asked you to run just before the first time we tried to install SP3 and IE8.

If so, please Right Click the .reg file and then select EDIT, then please copy and paste everything that is in the notepad file.

2) Do you have access to another computer and a USB stick

Thanks.

I have mbam logs and dds logs on my desktop.  Tell me again what I did for the reg patch?  What program did I use?

Yes.  I have access to another computer and a usb stick.

Hi,

Sorry, the .reg patch was from another thread, I got a bit muddled.

Now we need to determine if it is the IE8 installer that is the problem of the machine stopping it.

PLEASE DO NOT RUN THE IE8 INSTALLER FILE ON THE OTHER COMPUTER, PLEASE JUST DOUBLE CLICK IT AND SEE IF IT WILL OPEN AND RUN, IF IT DOES, THEN PLEASE JUST CANCEL THE INSTALL

Please transfer the IE8 installer file to your other computer and see if it will run DO NOT INSTALL THE IE8 FILE ON THE OTHER COMPUTER, if the file open ok and you do not get the "invalid win32 app" message, then just cancel the install by clicking the "Cancel" Button.

Let me know if the installer would have been able to have been run on the other computer if you had not canceled it or if you got the "Invaild win32 app" message.

Thanks.

That's okay.  We've been doing so many things with the computer, I wasn't sure if this was a file I had or not.

Okay.  I copied and pasted the IE8 installation file to a jump drive and plugged it in to my laptop.  When I double clicked on the file, I immediately got the Win32 application error.  It didn't even ask if i wanted to "run" the file like it does on my desktop.  Next?

Thanks for being so patient with my problems here...

Hi meg,

It looks as if the IE8 download is corrupt as I have just downloaded and run it on my system Windows 7 64bit and the file even on this system starts as it is meant to.

Please go to THIS web page for downloading the IE8 Installer.

Referring to the image below, please DO NOT click nothing else except the "Download" button that I have circled in red:

Photobucket

Then when prompted, click the SAVE button and choose to save the IE8 installer to the desktop. I have just downloaded it and it took less than 30 seconds but I have quite a decent conection, it could take up to 10 minutes depending on the connection you have to the net.

DO NOT do anything with the computer until the box that shows the download status bar says "Download Complete", just every know and then give the mouse a little wiggle so as the system does not go in to sleep mode.

Once the file is downloaded to the desktop it will look like the image on the left and then when you double click it, it will open the extracting box that you see on the right, once it has finished extracting, please follow all the prompts given by the installer for installing IE8,

Photobucket

Let me know how you get on.

Thanks.

Here's my take on it:  I think Google Chrome was the problem with the downloading of the installation file.  I was never asked to save the file somewhere.  It just starts downloading and then I have to say "show in folder".  It downloads files differently than Internet Explorer.  SO...what I did was download the file to my jump drive from my laptop using the internet explorer on my laptop.  I then took the jump drive over to my Dell desktop computer and saved it to the "desktop".  It then ran just as you explained.  It extracted the file and "appeared" to install.  Then when it was all done it said that Internet Explorer did not install properly and that I should reboot my computer to "undo" what it had done.  It then instructed me to visit the Microsoft Fix it center, which really was no help.  Then, I rebooted in safe mode.  I then tried to install the IE8 in safe mode.  Failed just as above.  So, at this point, I have a good installation file, my computer is just not cooperating.
