Dell desktop running extremely slow
My dell desktop is running extremely slow. I run disk deframenter, spybot search and destroy, Lavasoft Adaware, Malware bytes, and AVG free periodically. I have run Trend Micro Hijack this, but don't know what to do with the results. Can someone analyze and give me a recommendation?
Thank you.

Hello,
I have Microsoft office home and student 2007, Microsoft Windows xp home edition and it looks like the rest of the programs I use can be downloaded from the internet like itunes, and virus software, etc.

Hi Meg,
Do you have that installed, or do you have that installed and have the original Disk that you installed it with. If that disk is from the Laptop then the product key will not work with a new install on this system. The Office disk is going to need to be the one that was used to install Office on this system.
This system we are having issues with is Windows XP Professional, the Home Edition disk is no good, again, it will install but the product key on the sticker on the side of the tower will not work to activate the Home Edition version.
Also, please check for me, the Sticker on the side if the machine, is the 25 character Product key readable, please DO NOT post the product key here, just let me know if you can work out the characters as some times the characters fade over time.
All that aside, I may have one last ditch attempt to try and repair this IE problem, this may work, it may not, but it will be easier to try than installing the whole system.
First, lets get you a browser installed that I am familier with and can assist you better.
Using Chrome, please download the browser Firefox and install in it on this system.
Then once installed, please go to Tools > Options > General > Put a check next to "Always ask me where to save files" and then click OK and then close Firefox.
Then Please run this free online Security Test called Secunia, which will test all the programs on your system for security vunralbilities. Before clicking the Start scan button, please check the box for the option Enable thorough system inspection. Just below the "Scan Options:" section, you'll see the status of what's currently processing.
You will also see a process indicator that looks like this:
...when the scan completes, the message "Detection completed successfully" will appear in the Programs/Result section.
You will have a link next to all the programs on you system that need updating, please install these updates one by one until no more are showing.
I am hoping that Secunia will see any updates that IE8 needs to repair its self. Please install all the updates via the links that Secunia Provides and than let me know if IE is working. Fingers Crossed. =)

Hi,
First, i can read the product key code numbers on my machine.
Next, I installed Firefox, and ran the Secunia security test. It took an hour and found several applications. Some insecure and some that neede "Patching". They seemed not very important, but I tried to update. The programs were as follows: Skype, Macromedia flash player, I think adobe flash player, Google Chrome, Outlook Express and Windows media updates. It didn't like to install the macromedia flash player because it "conflicted" with Firefox. It wouldn't let me download any Windows updates because I wasn't using Internet Explorer (same with outlook express). I don't use Outlook Express by the way. After I attempted to install all these items i rebooted the system and am running that same scan again in the hopes that it will find IE8. We shall see...

Thank You for keeping me updated.
I think our only option is to reinstall the Operating system.
Let me know when you have everything backed up that is Important.
Make sure to back up the iTunes folder in the Music Folder and everything the is contained in it. It holds all the previous libraries and will save a lot of time when reinstalling the system,
Thanks.

Hi,
The main things to back up are:
1) Pictures
2) Music
3) Videos
4) Documents
5) Anything Saved to the desktop that you do not want to lose.
You can save them to all CD/DVD or USB drive, as long as you have enough disks or the drive is big enough to hold all the data.
Thanks.

Okay. I do have a backup hard drive that I am supposed to be using for my laptop, but I could never get good software to get it working. Can you recommend some free backup software I could download? I have a LaCie 2 big hard drive box that at this point it is networked with my laptop. I'm sure I could figure out how to plug it in to the dell desktop. Then, I could send all my important files to a folder on that drive.
Sorry to be such a high maintenance computer user..
Thanks.

Hi,
I am not sure what you mean by "networked" to my laptop and "Software To backup".
Is the backup drive connected to the laptop via a USB cable? Or is the drive a Wireless Media Server box that is networked to the laptop?
If it is the via the USB then you need just plug it into the machine we are working on and Windows will install the drivers, then Go to "Start > Computer > and it will be listed as a new drive, more then likely titled with LaCie 2 (*Some Drive Letter* such as E:\)
You can find instructions HERE for transfering Data from the machine to an external drive.

Hello K27!
Well, just wanted to give you an update. In trying to get my information backed up, I called the computer guy who got me set up with it. I ended up bringing my tower into him and he fixed my slow computer. He found that the things that I had uninstalled didn't completely uninstall. So, there were files out there that weren't completely gone from my system. He did an "executive" reload or something like that to my operating system, so I wouldn't have to back up files or reinstall programs. My system is now running at great speed and doesn't seem to be bogged down anymore. Internet Explorer 8 is installed and working perfectly!
Thank you for all the time you spent with me trying to solve this problem. It was nice of you to take the time. I will come back to this forum in the future.
Regards,
Meg

Hi meg,
Glad you got everything sorted.
I will post my standard prevention speech for you just so you have a few tips to part with.
Now some advice on how to surf safe in the future.
ALWAYS keep all programs on your PC up to date and this especially means your Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware/Firewall/Java and Adobe programs.
They can all be found via the "All Programs" feature in the start menu and if opened will 100% have a update feature somewhere.
NEVER use more than ONE Anti-Virus program,
NEVER use more than ONE resident Full time Anti-Spyware program,
NEVER use more than ONE Software Firewall,(and never use the Windows built in Firewall as it will not keep you protected)
As more than one of each of these will conflict with each other and leave you just as vunrable as not having them.
You can get some VERY GOOD FREE ones from HERE
Its always a good idea to back these up with SpywareBlaster as this will run in the background and not conflict with any of your other Security.
Also give WinPatrol a try as it is a very good program that will inform you of any changes being made to your system in the same way that User Account Control does but better, (DO NOT switch off UAC if you install WinPatrol, it is still very much needed)
Research and consider using a HARDWARE Firewall as this will provide a very good extra layer of protection.
Scan with each piece of your security Daily and at the very least two daily.
Always keep a few on-demand scanners on your machine and use them every other day, such as,
If you use IE then consider using a more secure browser such as FireFox or Opera
Install all the latest Windows updates from HERE
or by clicking start>all programs>Windows update, and keep going back and doing these untill you have all the avalible updates untill none are showing.
Its a good idea to set Windows Update to automatic so as not to miss any Important updates.
Always you a site advisor such as WOT to confirm the sites you are using are really the sites they say they are.
There is a version of WOT avalible for both IE and FIreFox.
Downloading and installing Secunia PSI will keep the system fully updated.
It runs quietly in the background and will give a balloon pop-up from the task bar each time a program needs updating. Just click the Secunia task bar icon and the program will open. You will then see a list of the program(s) that needs updating, click the blue circle under the "Solution" heading, and you will be taken directly to the download for the exploited program.
And please read these links for adivce on Computer Security:
Infection Prevention
Do's and Don't's of Security Programs

If you have any other questions then please fill free to post back,
I will mark this thread as solved tomorrow,
Surf Safe,
