XPS 15 change Home and End keys to Fn + Left and Fn + Right

Hi everybody!

I find the "home" and "end" keys in the upper right corner of the keyboard rather annoying.

Can I reassign them respectively to "Fn + Left" and "Fn + Right"?

I use a Dell XPS 15 9500.

Thank you!

Alt+Left / Alt+Right  remaping is not an option for me, cause Edge browser use that for back/forward.

All firmware programmers at dell use external keyboards?

This change is horrible ...

Working as a developer, I use these home/end button every 5 seconds .... I just want to kill my self each time I have to look the keyboard to right press the home and end button wich are at the top ...

I have used AutoHotKey to remap the Home/End button to the Page up and Down which are just above arrows, and as I don't use them, it work nicely.

I have tested that on Visual studio 2019 and VS Code with resharper and it doesn't conflict any shortcut (Except the fact I don't have PAge Up or down )

Here is the Script, hope it helps:

PgUp::Home
return
PgDn::End
return

For those of you running on Linux - I found this blog post which describes how to map the arrows+Windows/Super key to Home/End:

https://medium.com/@pawitp/my-quest-to-map-win-left-to-home-af43170db1eb

It is not for the faint of heart as it requires installing a patched libx11 for a complete solution.

For those running arch linux I have created a patched PKGBUILD here:

https://github.com/skennedy/svntogit-packages/tree/package/libx11/remap-super-arrows

To install:

git clone git@github.com:skennedy/svntogit-packages.git --branch package/libx11/remap-super-arrows --single-branch
cd svntogit-packages/trunk
pkgbuild -si

I figured that the only logic reason why they refuse to add FN+LEFT as HOME and FN+RIGHT as END through new BIOS update must be because that it's not "printed" on the keyboard keys.

But, I just happen to get "scroll lock" activated on my computer, first I couldn't figure out how to disable it again. Turned out that FN+S acts like "scroll lock" - and it’s not printed on my "S" key!

So now I'm angry!

The proposed solution by dodecaphonic is not a solution, just a workaround one person thinks is acceptable.

Please remove the 'Solved' flag until Dell comes with a real solution.

It looks like Dell listened!!! (or their BIOS developers were also tired of that issue )

Just got the information about a BIOS update for the 9310:

Enhancements:
- Added secondary function key that is Fn+Left as Home and Fn+Right as End.

THANK YOU DELL!!

(now they just have to resolve the modern standby issue (crashing and overheating when lid is closed), the bluetooth low energy issue (though there is a workaround) and remove the killer wifi stuff  )

Dear dell,

It has been four months since the issue was reported. Is there any progress on the fix?

Thank you.

Anyone know if this will be rolling out to other machines?  I just got a XPS 15 9500 and I have the same home/end issue. I did an update of the bios after reading your post, and it updated, but it didn't fix the issue.

Is there a setting in Bios that needs to be enabled to allow that change?

Thanks.

Some good news at last! Well, at least for the 9310 owners. For the rest of us, could Dell please make an announcement regarding other affected laptops? If not a precise timeline, at least some form of commitment to apply the fix to other models as soon as possible would be greatly appreciated. (Despite the workarounds, using my XPS-17 is still a constant source of frustration, especially when it comes to coding, the primary use I make of this otherwise solid laptop.)

Another dissatisfied customer here. Geez, what were they thinking? As a software developer, my right hand now suddenly has to do gymnastics all the time while just doing basic navigation through my source code. And to add insult to injury, I have to use the FN key for either my F keys, or the Home, End and PrtSc keys - all of which I need all the time. I'm trying really hard not to resort to any obscenities here. What the heck, Dell. I'm really considering to send my new 9500 back now, and buy another 9570 from some third party just to get an actually usable keyboard layout back.

Same here, I'm on a new 7750 Precision and I have the same issue as a software developer.

Can anyone confirm if the fix will be deployed soon?

I feel the same frustration! I'm a Developer, and the Home, End keys don't make any sense to use with the FN key, they are too many keys used by Developers! I already activated in the BIOS to use the Primary Functions of the FN, and it works from the F1 key to the F9 key. From the F10 key to F12, the second FN options remain active. So it's impossible to be profitable writing code! I'm thinking to return my new Dell XPS 9500, and returning to use HP.

XPS 13 9300 owner here. I too got excited to see the bios update for fn-left and right home and end functionality. Just updated my bios and sad to see the fix has not been brought to my model. Dell, please release the fix for the 9300. As another developer, this is something that affects my productivity greatly.

Thanks.
