XPS 15 change Home and End keys to Fn + Left and Fn + Right

Hi everybody!

I find the "home" and "end" keys in the upper right corner of the keyboard rather annoying.

Can I reassign them respectively to "Fn + Left" and "Fn + Right"?

I use a Dell XPS 15 9500.

Thank you!

I totally agree with I_Peters -- my "solution" is not a solution at all. It's merely a workaround... and one that is not very satistying. I find myself working with an external keyboard most of the time, simply because I can't be productive with that horrible idea of a keyboard. I 100% also support his suggestion to unmark this question/problem as solved.

Really happy that this BIOS update has rolled out for XPS 13 developers. Does anyone from Dell know when can we expect it on the 9500 XPS 15 please?

I 100% agree.  I see no rationale behind moving home + end up to F11 and F12 on my model, and then having page up and down on the arrow keys.

Why wouldn't I want to navigate with Fn+Left (home), Fn+Right (end), Fn+Up (Page up), Fn+Down (Page down) - as per older XPS models.

Additionally, power on this model is located right next to where home & end are.  So your fingers end up resting on the power button.  What's the benefit of that?

Dell please provide the BIOS update for the 9500 series.

It's in the same position as the ones that have already been updated, and it's the first time I'm ever actually looking forward to a new BIOS update.  It'll absolutely change how portable this laptop is.

XPS 9500 user here.

I just can't get used to the Home/End key position.

As a developer, I use them very often and I can't get used to the F11/F12 keys, it's rather annoying actually.

The FN+Left/Right arrows were infinitely better. That's how it was in my old Latitude, it was perfect.

@Anonymous Please update the bios of this model too

Another XPS 9500 user here, a developer too. Dear dell make the XPS actually usable to power users.

On my previous XPS 13 from 2012 it worked like charm

I couldn't agree more with this - I'm a developer who bought the XPS because of its form/power, but the Fn + Left/Fn + Right as Home/End is a big productivity killer.  I also just can't understand the reason for omitting it, and if a simple firmware update will fix this issue, why not deliver?  The laptop has a serious opportunity to amaze, but I'll admit it's hard to get past this issue...

Dear Dell,

This has been reported 10 months ago. When is this getting fixed?

Thank you.

I am also a Developer and I suffer from this issue very much.

I've just received my new laptop "Precision 5550" and it downgraded my productivity from the very start

Please, please, provide the update for Precision 5550 BIOS as well.

Also, please unmark the "Solution" answer, because it doesn't solve the issue at all.

The position of remapped keys (F10/F11) is still poor and it's not the same as Arrow Left / Right.

The software can't remap Home/End to arrows.

In our case, the laptops were purchased in a batch by company.

Those who bought lots of them didn't expect that there will be such a silly issue with the Home & End buttons.

Previously I used XPS and it was perfect. Except that I had to return it due to some unsolvable issues with a screen. That XPS was replaced with a newer and "better" Precision. And I like it, except for this very annoying issue.

A BIOS update would be very much appreciated.

Got an answer from Dell.

Their argument is that it's by design and that we've agreed with this when we purchased the product.

I wonder if any of you ever reviewed every single key before purchasing a laptop. I didn't. Next time I will.

Is that honestly Dell's response? That it's by design and we accepted that by purchasing it?

The XPS has held the crown of being the outright best developer laptop for many years. But now they're willing to trash that reputation because they can't be bothered putting a BIOS update out?

In fairness, their lack of response to this issue has already seriously damaged that stellar reputation I had for the XPS line. Now that I'm going to have to studiously check each revision for stupid design decisions I might as well start looking at other machines as well

Dear Dell,

Please release the BIOS update to the XPS 15 9500 too.
The new HOME and END button combination is really frustrating as a developer.

True. I switched from Precision 5530 to 5750 and as software developer this drives me crazy. Why change perfectly working setup from older models ? To be honest I can change my habit if the keys were at different spot, but place home/end at top of the keyboard is plain silly ;/ I keep hitting old combination which cause havoc on my desktop switching windows, etc.

I would not think that something so trivial would lead me to consider buying an older model.

Anyway Dell please add an option to use Home/End as in all previous models. This would require a simple BIOS change for you and you would made a lot of ppl happy.

Here we are, almost 1 year later and there's still no sign of Dell's willingness to change this.

It's sad.

Please @Anonymous, Please reconsider adding this to the BIOS as an option. Unless it's technically impossible, but at least we would like to know.
