My Dell Precision 7710 17inch i7 was working perfectly fine. I use it in combination with a CoolerMaster CM-19 laptop stand with intergrated 4 port usb hub. I also connect the laptop to a Dell 24 inch full hd monitor via a hdmi cable.

When I came from the office, I connected up as I always do. I noticed my keyboard and mouse was not on even though the usb hub was connected. I checked the hub and noticed the usb cable at the hub was not sitting correctly. I inspected it amd realised the port had come lose. I then disconnected everything and took the cooling stand to an electrical engineer friend of mine. He inspected the usb hub pc board and resoldered the lost port back on. He did notice a chip on the board was getting very hot. We tested the hub on his laptop and all worked fine. I went back to my place.

I connected the hub to my precisiom 7710 via the usb cable to test it. All worked well. I then re setup the cooling stand and cables. The colling stand has a power supply to power the fans. At this point I plugged in the power jack for the cooling stand. At that point everything switched off and then came back on. However my precisiom 7710 and the gaming keyboard did not switch on. I also noticed the power adaptor green light had gone off. I disconnected the 7710 and the power adaptor and moved to another table. I reconnected the power adpator to the wall outlet and made sure the green power light came on. I then plugged it into the 7710 at the power jack. The 7710 would not switch on and I noted a faint and fine pitched sound coming from it. The battery was low so I thought it just needs to charge. I left for a while and noticed the charging light on the 7710 was not on.

I checked everything,disconnected everything and then reconnected the power cable. The 7710 would also not switch on and the adaptor switched off the minute I put in the power cable into the jack port. I tried another dell adapter for my Inpiron N17R. This adapter has a blue led ring that glows when plugged into a power outlet. This adaptor switched off as soon as I plugged it in as well. I tried both the adaptors on my Inpiron N17R and they work perfectly.

I also took out the battery, removed residual charge by pressing the power button for 1minute with no power supply to the Precision 7710. Nothing works. The 7710 does not switch on.

I am suspecting one of three problems.

1. The jack connecting cable to the motherboard has been fried by a power surge.

2. The USB port that I used to connect the cooling stand to the 7710 has shorted out and is preventing the unit from switching on or charging.

3. The motherboard is shorting out due to the cooling stand having a power switch which transferred through the usb cable.

Please can someone advise on this and what the repair would be with potential costs. I am in South Africa and I am hoping that Dell South Africa can help me.
