Companies’ AI ambitions could stall on a basic issue
A recent survey from Dansk Industri shows that Danish companies are expected to invest approximately DKK 111 billion in IT in 2026. That points to a business community with sustained digital ambitions.
But as investment in new technologies accelerates, the underlying foundation must keep pace, both in terms of software and, not least, core infrastructure.
Many companies talk about AI, hybrid cloud, and data-driven decision-making. Yet the infrastructure underneath those ambitions often receives far less attention than it deserves.
In many management discussions, storage is still treated as background technology that simply has to work. That is a risky mindset.
Because in practice, this is where companies determine whether investments in new technologies will create real business value.
The underlying architecture determines whether IT enables fast applications, stronger data accessibility, built-in security, and stable operations, or creates bottlenecks and and delaying critical initiatives.
The higher the ambitions, the greater the demands on the architecture that supports it.
The foundation has become business-critical
The idea that storage is just a standard component is increasingly outdated.
Modern IT platforms have become intelligent hubs that automate complex tasks and unlock new efficiency gains. As data volumes grow and the demand for speed and flexibility increases, storage has evolved into a core part of modern business infrastructure.
It is no longer just about storing data. It is about making data accessible across increasingly complex environments.
Today, many companies have to balance private cloud environments with multi-cloud strategies. Private cloud typically offers greater control, security, and predictability, while multi-cloud provides flexibility and scale across platforms. Most companies end up with a combination of both, and with that comes added complexity.
The challenge is that data rarely sits in one place. It is spread across on-premises data centres, private clouds, and public cloud platforms. That creates flexibility, but it also increases the need for coherence.
When data moves across environments, it must remain accessible, secure, and consistent. Applications must also run smoothly regardless of where they are deployed.
At the same time, requirements around security and compliance continue to grow, especially in Denmark, where companies must navigate a range of EU regulations.
Businesses need to manage data responsibly and ensure consistent governance across environments.
In that context, storage becomes a unifying layer. It connects the infrastructure, reduces silos, and provides the visibility companies need to work across platforms without losing control of their data or compromising security.
When ambition meets reality
No technology illustrates the gap between ambition and infrastructure more clearly than AI.
Generative AI and machine learning depend on large volumes of data that must be accessed quickly and without delay.
In our conversations with customers, we often see that even small bottlenecks in infrastructure can significantly slow development or, in the worst case, bring projects to a halt.
AI is not just another workload. It increases the demands placed on data, both in volume and in speed.
Models need to be trained, fine-tuned, and continuously fed with new datasets. That places entirely new demands on throughput and low latency across the infrastructure.
If data cannot be delivered quickly enough to the systems that need it, the potential of AI will simply not be realised.
That means storage is not just a technical detail. It is a direct prerequisite for companies that want to capture the full value of their investments.
It is like investing in a high-end racing bike and then expecting it to perform on a gravel road.
The result is friction, frustration, and lost momentum. In the same way, companies risk undermining their technology investments if the infrastructure is not built to support them.
Storage is now an overlooked but crucial driver of digital innovation.
That is why the discussion should not be about choosing between innovation and infrastructure. It should be about understanding the connection between the two.
Without a strong and modern foundation, it becomes much harder to turn digital ambitions into the business value they are meant to create.
