Types of server technology

Server technology falls into three main types of servers.

Tower servers
Resembling a PC desktop tower, tower servers are standalone devices that are ideal for small businesses. Because of their compact size, they don’t necessarily require a designated server enclosure. Tower servers generally require less maintenance, which in turn can make them more affordable. Data is stored in a single tower and can be easily identified on a company server.

Rack servers
Rack servers are designed to be housed in a server rack. A server rack allows multiple devices to be stacked vertically to conserve space and simplify organization. Rack servers typically provide more processing power than tower servers and are categorized by the number of units they occupy within the rack.

A significant benefit of rack servers is that all components of the system are located in the same place, which makes it easier to manage connections and maintain the system. This can provide a small business with its own 'data center.' A 1U server occupies a single unit, or roughly 4.445cms (1.75 inches) in height, while a 2U server and a 4U server occupy two and four units, respectively.

Blade servers

Blade servers are stripped-down servers on very thin cards mounted vertically and side-by-side within an enclosure. The chassis containing blade servers provides power, cabling, and cooling to each unit, reducing power consumption and simplifying maintenance. Ultimately, blade servers provide much greater processing power, while taking up less space and using less energy.

While blade servers are more expensive than the other two types of servers, the level of performance is beyond compare.

Server technology in PowerEdge servers

Server technology in PowerEdge servers

PowerEdge servers provide the highest performance for a wide range of applications and workloads from the edge, to the cloud, to the core. With a broad array of tower, rack, and modular servers with a blade/hybrid infrastructure, PowerEdge server technology helps businesses build a modern infrastructure that minimizes IT challenges and drives business success.

Flexible configuration
Whether businesses require a single server, a small server rack, or a data center full of server technology, Dell offers devices to meet every need. IT teams can configure each device to meet exact requirements, choosing from a range of server processors, memory, storage drives, accelerators, and more.

Automated management
Intelligent management features and tools help automate processes and server management, enabling IT administrators to spend less time on routine maintenance and more time on more significant priorities.

Automated management can not only help organizations save time and money but can also assist with respect to identifying unused resources, more clearly define business processes, and manage decentralized or remote teams.

Scalable architecture
Highly scalable architecture and flexible internal storage help to maximize performance. The flexibility also enables your business to adapt to various applications and workloads.

Businesses often need to increase or reduce their performance and functionalities for various reasons. Scalable architecture can also help ensure a minimum level of service in a failure event.

Built-in security
With security embedded into every server, PowerEdge devices provide a comprehensive, cyber-resilient architecture to protect data and the data center.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is server technology?
Server technology refers to types of computers within a business that manage and provide access to specific resources for other devices and users. Servers may be dedicated to managing access to files, web content, multimedia content, email, real-time messaging, games, backups, applications, and more.

Servers also facilitate data exchange in general, and businesses and organizations in all sectors need to evolve with server technology. Server technology can also help your business through automated data backup, data management, file organization, email management. Servers are essential to the growth and expansion of organizations in all sectors.

What is tower vs. rack vs. blade server technology?
A tower server is a standalone server housed in an enclosure that resembles a desktop tower. Tower servers are easy to manage and affordable to acquire, making them ideal for smaller businesses that require just a few servers.

Tower servers are also known for high optimization and customization capacity. Tower racks are also easier to cool than alternative options and can be quickly and affordably upgraded. Tower servers are often utilized for network purposes, communication purposes, or web purposes.

Rack servers are built to be housed in a server rack where multiple servers can be stacked vertically to save space and simplify organization. Rack servers offer more processing power than towers and are often described as "general-purpose servers" because they can support a broad range of applications and infrastructures.

Rack servers can act as a self-contained server and are quite cost-effective.

Blade servers are comprised of servers built on very thin cards and mounted side-by-side, providing high server density levels. The apparent benefit of blade servers is that organizations can save a significant amount of physical space. Some blade servers boast internal storage drives, as well.
