Symptom

Your PC may experience a Windows STOP error or blue screen error VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR or DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE during the initial setup procedure. This may occur when the PC is not connected to the AC adapter and noticed within the first 20 minutes of powering on the PC.

Solution

To resolve this issue, it is recommended to power the PC using the AC adapter of the laptop during the initial setup procedure and update the video or graphics driver and BIOS to the latest version.

Update BIOS

Warning: It is recommended that you disconnect external peripherals like external hard disk drives, printers, scanners before updating the BIOS on your Dell PC.
 
Warning: Dell laptop PCs must have the battery that is installed and charged to at least 10% before you begin the BIOS update. Dell recommends running the laptop PC on AC power before proceeding with the update process.

  1. Browse to the Dell Drivers & downloads page for your PC
  2. Ensure you have selected the correct Operating System
  3. Under Category, select BIOS
  4. Locate the latest System BIOS
  5. Click Download and save the file to your PC
  6. Open File Explorer and browse to the location where the downloaded file is saved
  7. Double-click the BIOS setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process
  8. Your PC may restart several times to complete the BIOS update procedure

Update video or graphics driver

  1. Browse to the Dell Drivers & downloads page for your PC
  2. Ensure you have selected the correct Operating System
  3. Under Category, select Video
  4. Locate the latest Intel or NVIDIA GeForce driver applicable for your PC
  5. Click Download and save the file to your PC
  6. Open File Explorer and browse to the location where the downloaded file is saved
  7. Double-click the Intel or NVIDIA GeForce driver setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process
  8. Restart the PC
