This video talks about Unified Snapshots overview, mechanism, features, and demo on Unity system.
Hello and welcome to this video in E MC Unity. In this video, we will talk about unified snapshots for unity systems. Here is the agenda for this video. We will start with an overview after we will talk about the mechanism and the features of the snapshots. And at the end, we will go through a demo of UNOS and where to find additional resources.
Let's just start with an overview. A snapshot is a point in time copy of data snapshots technology is based on redirect and write technology which means the new changes to snapped resources are written to a new location in the storage pool and unity snapshots are provided for block and follow resources. It is also used as a foundation for native asynchronous replication. There are two ways of creating snapshots either manual or via schedule which will be shown in the demo.
Let's take a look at how snapshots work. For example, here is the source pointing to block ABC and D A writeable snapshot has also been taken of the same blocks. A request came to modify D on the source. A source will redirect the new data D prime to A new location in the pool.
Not here on the snapshot side, nothing changes. And the original data is preserved on the other side, block. A of the snapshot was modified also to a prime aram is written to a new location in the pool and the snapshots pointers are updated to point to the updated data. Now that we have seen how snapshots work. Let's talk about the features of snapshots. You can attach a block of snapshots to a host to give it read and write access.
Also, you can create a share using a file snapshot to provide access. Similarly, you can utilize the previous versions of a snap of a file system for restoring purposes. In addition, you will be able to take a snapshot of a snap as well by making a copy of file or block snapshots. Let's now walk through a demo at unisphere after you log in in Tunis sphere, click a snapshot schedule, enter data protection from here.
You can create a snapshot schedule. You can specify how frequently you want to take a snapshot of your storage resources. Also, you can select the days you want as will the time. In addition, you can specify the expiration time of snapshots. Once you are done, click create to create a snapshot schedule while creating a file system. In a snapshot step, you can enable snapshot schedule by clicking this box and select a snapshot schedule from the file system properties, page, click a snapshot tab.
Here, you can create snapshots and do other actions. For example, here is the list of actions it can be made after you create a snapshot note here, you cannot do any of these actions if your snapshot has been expired. Also as a property of snapshots, you can change the name of your snapshot.
So it can be more meaningful to the user while curating a snap in the learning properties page on the snapshot tab. You can see the actions you can do for snapshots for block. Not here. The difference between the file system and online you can attach and detach a block snapshot to a host.
