Chromebook 5190 or 5190 2-in-1 no power

You may encounter a situation where a Chromebook 5190 or 5190 2-in-1 system will not power on immediately after connecting the AC power adapter.

It is normal behavior for a Chromebook 5190 or 5190 2-in-1 system battery to discharge to below 0% battery charge. It is recommended that the system remain plugged into AC power for 30 minutes or more to charge the battery in this situation.

When AC power is connected to the system, the power LED will have a solid amber indication.

If the system continues to not power on or boot up after 30 minutes of charge time, please follow the steps within the below flowchart to determine the next steps to take.

You can use the following flowchart to help troubleshoot the No Power issue on the Chromebook 5190 or 5190 2-in-1 (Figure A):

Figure A: Flowchart to use as a guide for troubleshooting No Power on Chromebook 5190 or 5190 2-in-1

The following table shows the Power LED behavior for the Chromebook 5190 / 5190 2-in-1 to aid in troubleshooting No Power issues (S0 = working state; S5 = shutdown or off state; S0iX = system in sleep state) (Table 1):

Charging / Power State LED behavior
Charging (S0/S0iX/S5)  Solid Amber
Full Charged (S0/S0iX/S5) Solid White
Discharging in S0 Solid White
Discharging in S0iX Blinking White
Discharging in S5 Off
Battery Error Blinking Amber

Solution

SLN312616_en_US__2icon NOTE: This process takes about 5 minutes to complete once the system is deprovisioned.

To perform a Read Only (RO) Firmware Update on your Chromebook 5190 or 5190 2-in-1, follow the steps below.

Before you begin, verify that the Chromebook 5190 or 5190 2-in-1 is Deprovisioned by following the guidelines provided in the following Dell Knowledgebase Article: How to Verify a Chromebook Has Been Deprovisioned.

The following steps will update the Read Only (RO) Firmware and resolve the No Power issues on the Chromebook 5190 or 5190 2-in-1:

SLN312616_en_US__2icon NOTE: For security reasons, the Read Only (RO) Firmware Update cannot be pushed through normal Google update processes. To proceed with the installation, please scan the barcodes OR type the script. If you have a Bar Code Scanner, bar codes are provided for each command to make deployment easier.
  1. Log into the Chromebook and run auto updater (you can run Google auto update following the steps outlined in the following Dell Knowledgebase article: How to check the Dell Chromebook 11 3120 for software updates).

SLN312616_en_US__2icon Note: Update to the lastest version of Chrome OS or at least a minimum of R75.

  2. Transition to Developer Mode (Hold the ESC key + Refresh key + Power Button, release all three keys and wait for the Recovery screen to appear (Figure 1). After the Recovery screen appears, press Ctrl + D ) and hit Enter (Figure 2):

SLN312616_en_US__2icon NOTE: If there is an error message stating that Developer Mode is blocked then the system is likely not de-provisioned. Please deprovision the system and start over. Reference the following Google support article for instructions on how to deprovision your system: Repurpose or retire Chrome devices: Deprovision or disable a device SLN312616_en_US__6iC_External_Link_BD_v1.
